CPP Falls 70-67 at Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - In another closely-contested conference game, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 70-67 setback at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos fall to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Coyotes improve to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

William Christmas led CPP offensively on Saturday, tallying 27 points on 8-for-14 shooting. He also added four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 29 minutes played. Phoenix Shackelford dished out a season-high five assists while Finn Eckhardt collected a season-best eight rebounds.

CSUSB had four players with double-digit scoring, led by a 19-point and 11-rebound effort from Andres Villa.

The Coyotes jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half but the Broncos bounced back with an 11-3 run capped off with a basket from Eckhardt to pull CPP in front 11-10 at the 13:20 mark. The Broncos kept the lead for most of the remaining portion of the first half but CSUSB kept the margin relatively close and layup by Naradain James gave the hosts a 30-29 lead heading into the break.

Eckhardt joined teammate Mason Dickerson with seven points apiece through the first 20 minutes of action.

The two squads traded the lead a few times early in the second half before the Coyotes rallied for a 13-2 run to widen the gap to double digits.

The Broncos didn't back down though and kept up their offensive pressure, trimming the margin back to three points on two different occasions. The first instance was when Riley Schaefer dropped in a layup at the 2:42 mark but that was followed by a 5-0 run from CSUSB.

With three seconds left in the second half, Christmas sank a pair of free throws to cut the Coyotes' lead to 70-67. After a missed free throw from CSUSB, CPP grabbed the rebound but couldn't even the score to send the contest into overtime.

The Broncos will return to action on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Cal State East Bay.
