POMONA -- Jimmie Villalobos recorded his second hat trick in three games as the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team scored seven goals for the second straight game defeating Cal State East Bay 7-0 Friday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 matches, rising to 9-4-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the CCAA, which is currently second in the conference standings with 2.5 points per match, trailing CCAA leader Cal State LA (12-0-1, 7-0-1 CCAA) which sports 2.75 points per match. The Pioneers fall to 2-13 overall and 0-9 in league action.
CPP is on an offensive tear, outscoring opponents 18-1 in the last three contests, including back-to-back games with seven goals; it's the first time in program history the Broncos have scored seven or more goals in consecutive matches. It is also the 11th time in CPP men's soccer history the team has scored seven or more goals in a game (11-0 all time in those games, and 2-0 against Cal State East Bay when scoring at least seven goals).
Villalobos continued his domination on the offensive side of the ball, burying his
14th,
15th and
16th goals of the season, which is now tied for the third-highest total at the NCAA Division II level so far this season. He is also five goals from matching the program record for most goals in a season, which is 21 set by Sergi Monso in 2017.
Scoring twice on the night was
Gabriel Castillo, who
scored at 41:10, then again three minutes later
at 44:02 as the Broncos took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
Benny Lindahl scored 7:46 minutes into the second half, then Villalobos' aforementioned third goal of the night came just two minutes later. In the 70th minute,
Jordan Jackmon scored
his fourth goal of the year to put a cap on the 7-0 victory.
Cal Poly Pomona will play its final regular season home game Sunday when it hosts Cal State Monterey Bay at Kellogg Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:30 am.
