Broncos Upset No. 22 Tritons in Overtime

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona ended the 2019 calendar year with a bang, grabbing an overtime 69-61 upset victory over No. 22-ranked UC San Diego Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos improve to 7-5 overall, 3-3 in the CCAA with the win, while the Tritons drop to 8-3, 4-2 in conference.

Lauryn Catching led the Broncos with 16 points, while Jackie Ricketson added another 12 points, including perhaps the most important points to tie the game in the fourth and send it into overtime. Mylah Andrada was on fire from the perimeter, banking in three triples for nine points off the bench.

Things came down to the wire in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, tied at 44-44. The Tritons took a six-point lead with 3:35 left on the clock, but one of Andrada's treys put the Broncos back within two, 54-52, with 43 seconds left.

CPP called a timeout and Ricketson stole the ball away and scored on the fastbreak. There was still 17 seconds left on the clock, but neither team could score to send the game into overtime.

Ricketson gave the Broncos some momentum to open the overtime period, scoring the first two points of the frame. UCSD responded with a two-pointer of its own, but CPP created some separation with just under 90 seconds left in the period. Andrada knocked down a shot from beyond the arc off a Ricketson assist, before Jayda Villareal hit two free throws to put the Broncos up 65-57.

The Tritons tried to foul back into the game, but CPP hit its chances at the charity stripe to keep the eight-point lead and win the game 69-61.

CPP takes a break before returning to action on Jan. 2, as it heads north to take on Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m.
