Bench Leads Broncos to First Win of 2020

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona rang in the new year with a 66-56 road victory over Sonoma State Thursday night.

The Broncos improve to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA with the win, while the Seawolves drop to 8-5 on the year, 4-4 in conference.

Two Broncos made big impacts off the bench, with Sheridan Glover scoring a career-high 19 points on an impressive 8-of-9 shooting output. Kasey Smit followed with 16 points on the night as the duo led CPP to a 42.3 shooting percentage on the night as a team.

SSU opened the game with six-straight points, but CPP pulled within two to end the quarter trailing just 20-18.

Smit banked in a layup to tie the game at 20-20 on the Broncos' first possession of the second quarter, but it wasn't until late in the frame the visitors made their move.

The Seawolves had built up a 31-26 lead, but five-straight CPP free throws tied the game before Glover stole the ball away and scored on the fast break, 33-31. In the final 90 seconds before halftime, the Broncos went on a 7-1 run to hold a 40-34 upper hand at the break.

Halfway through the third, SSU managed to pull within one, 46-45, but the Broncos weren't going to surrender their lead. Glover scored off a Smit assist to spark a 9-0 run and give CPP some separation. Leilia Orji finished two free throws to fuel the scoring spree, before Smit capped the run with a layup off a steal, 55-45.

The Broncos held a 55-50 cushion heading into the final quarter and outscored the Seawolves 11-6 in the frame to secure the 66-56 victory.

CPP looks to keep momentum rolling as it remains on the road, taking on SF State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
