POMONA -- Riley Schaefer led the way with 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting and
Nikhil Peters added 12 points, all from three-point range, as the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team continued its winning ways with a convincing 65-56 victory over Stanislaus State on Thursday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos, who are receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll and ranked at No. 3 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region poll released Wednesday, have won 10 straight games, rising to 17-5 overall and 15-5 in the CCAA, pulling within one-half game of CCAA-leader Cal State East Bay (15-4). The Warriors fall to 10-13 (7-12 CCAA).
For the first 25 minutes of the contest, it was never in doubt as the host Broncos controlled the pace from the opening tip through the midway point of the second half. CPP jumped out to its largest lead of the night at 20 points (37-17) with 17:29 left, but Stanislaus kept it interesting, outscoring the hosts 37-22 over the next 15 minutes to pull within just five points at 59-54 with two minutes left. However, the Broncos scored six of the final eight points to secure the win.
As a team, CPP connected on 51.2 percent of its shots (21 of 41), including 50 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 16). On the other end of the floor, Stanislaus was 18 for 50 shooting (36 percent) and hit 8 of 18 three-pointers.
Cal Poly Pomona won't compete again until next Thursday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 pm from Kellogg Arena.
