POMONA -- Monica Todd led the way with 14 points and
Jayda Villareal had a career-best night, chipping in with 13 points in 15 minutes off the bench as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team snuck past visiting Stanislaus State, 69-65, on Thursday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos, who entered the contest as the No. 5-ranked team in the first official NCAA Division II West Region Poll released Wednesday, rises to 21-4 overall and 17-3 in the CCAA, securing themselves the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament in two weeks. The Warriors fell to 7-16 (6-13 CCAA).
Both teams saw their fair share of holding a lead in the ballgame; the Broncos led for 20:51 and the Warriors held an advantage for 15:44. While CPP led by as much as nine points (32-23) with 7:52 to go in the third period, Stanislaus State rallied to take a 55-53 lead with four minutes to go in the contest, but the Broncos went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes and continued to hold off a pesky Warriors team for the narrow four-point win.
Stanislaus State outscored Cal Poly Pomona 24-11 in points off turnovers as CPP gave the ball away 25 times. The Broncos did shot 40.4 percent from the floor on 21 of 52 attempts, and connected on 21 of 29 free throws (72.4 percent). Conversely, the Warriors hit 26 of 74 shots (35.1 percent) and made just four free throws out of nine tries on the night.
In addition to the double-digit point effort by Todd and Villareal,
Kasey Smit added 11 points and
Jordyn Shane added 10 to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Warriors' Kyanna Davis led all players with 20 points.
Cal Poly Pomona won't compete again until next Thursday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 pm from Kellogg Arena.
