POMONA -- With seconds remaining in a tie ballgame,
Dominique Dotson corralled an offensive rebound under the basket, immediately went up, got fouled, then nailed the last of two free throws with 0.6 left on the regulation clock, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 67-66, on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night Thursday at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos, who entered the game ranked steady at No. 5 in this week's NCAA Division II West Regional rankings, rises to 22-4 overall and 18-3 in the CCAA. The Toros fell to 13-14 (9-12 CCAA).
While the majority of the game remained close, CPP enjoyed a 10 point lead at 15-5 with 4:00 to play in the first period while CSUDH held a nine-point lead at 47-38 with 5:30 to play in the third quarter. Over the next nine minutes of action, the Broncos went on a 26-10 run to hold a seven-point lead with six minutes to go in the game. The Toros came back to tie the game at 66 with a minute left, but it wasn't until the final second that Dotson finally broke the tie to win it for CPP at the free throw line.
Jordyn Shane led the Broncos with 16 points, followed by
Rebecca Islas who had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Monica Todd chipped in with 10 points and 10 boards.
Kasey Smit and
Lauryn Catching had nine and eight points, respectively, in the victory.
As a team, CPP connected on 35.5 percent from the floor on 27 of 76 shooting. CSUDH was nearly identical on offense, connecting on 35.4 percent on 23 of 65 shooting. The Toros were led by Ahlisha Henderson, who matched Shane with 16 points.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action Saturday night in the final regular season game of 2018-19, playing host to Cal State San Bernardino in Kellogg Arena. It will also be Senior Night, and the Broncos will recognize their lone senior,
Jordyn Shane, in a special pre-game ceremony, prior to the 5:30 pm tipoff.
