POMONA -- Trailing by four points entering the fourth quarter, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rallied to defeat Cal State San Marcos, 64-60, on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos, who entered the week as the 20th-ranked team in the D2SIDA National Top 25 Media Poll and were also receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, rise to 19-3 overall and 15-2 in the CCAA. The Cougars fall to 11-9 (8-8 CCAA).
With a score of 48-44 in favor of CSUSM with 10 minutes left in the ballgame, six different Broncos contributed to the scoring column, led by
Kasey Smit, who scored six of her eight points in the final period. CPP was able to turn its deficit into a four-point lead at 56-52 all within a five-minute span. The Cougars were able to get within one point at 61-60 with 18 seconds left, but that's as close as they would get as
Dominique Dotson and
Jordyn Shane sealed the win at the free throw line down the stretch.
Monica Todd scored a team-high 17 points while Shane chipped in with 16, including 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Rebecca Islas dropped in 11 points and handed out a team-best four assists in the contest.
As a team, the Broncos connected on just 33.3 percent of their shots (24 of 72). On the other end of the floor, the Cougars made 46.2 percent from the floor on 24 of 52 attempts. CSUSM's Emma Forel tallied a game-high 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting.
Cal Poly Pomona will travel way up north for a Thursday night showdown with Humboldt State in Arcata. Tipoff from Lumberjack Arena is set for 5:30 pm.
