LOS ANGELES -- After rallying from a three-run deficit with seven scores in the top of the ninth inning to win the first of two games Friday, 11-7, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 9-5 setback in the nightcap to split a doubleheader with host Cal State L.A. at Reeder Field in Los Angeles.
The Broncos are now 9-8 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles move to 4-10 (3-7 CCAA).
Trailing by a score of 7-4 heading into the final inning of game two, CPP scored seven runs (five with two outs) to escape with the much-needed victory in Friday's opener.
Nick Peifer had three of the Broncos' nine hits in the first game, going 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI.
Nic Hernandez hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the fourth inning.
Cesar Lopez also compiled three hits in a 3 for 4 effort with a double and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles jumped all over CPP starter
Tim Holdgrafer early, starting with a RBI single before giving up a grand slam three batters later to put the Broncos in a 5-0 hole after the first frame. CPP chipped away in its next at bat, scoring three runs to pull within two at 5-3, but CSULA would plate two more runs in the bottom of the third to eventually chase Holdgrafer (4-1) from the contest.
In the end, Peifer served up another multi-hit game, going 2 for 3 with a walk.
Brennan McKenzie and
Ryon Knowles both had a double, and
Matt Manskar was 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI.
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State L.A. will wrap up the four-game series with a single game scheduled for 1:00 pm Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona, weather permitting.
