CHICO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team got a run in the top of the first inning, but that would be it, falling 4-1 to Chico State in the series finale Saturday at Nettleton Stadium in Chico.
The Broncos (22-24 overall) settle for a four-game series split with the Wildcats (21-17, 17-16 CCAA), falling out of the Top 6 in the CCAA standings at 20-20 with four games to play in the regular season for CPP.
Brennan McKenzie struck out swinging to lead off the game, but reached first on a wild pitch and got to second on a throwing error by the catcher trying to get McKenzie out on the play. McKenzie then moved to third on a passed ball before coming home on a ground out by
Ryon Knowles. From that point on, Chico State starting pitcher Grant Larson caught fire, and at one point, retired 14 straight batters en route to a complete-game win, allowing only four hits and the one unearned run.
Chico's offense got single runs in the second, third, seventh and eighth to secure an important win for the Wildcats.Â
Jeremy Taylor (2-1) got the loss for CPP, giving up two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series with Cal State San Marcos. Single games against the Cougars will be played Friday and Saturday in San Marcos, both at 3:00 pm, before returning home for Senior Day on Sunday for a doubleheader that is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch.
