CCAA Tournament Champs! On To NCAA Regionals!

STOCKTON, Calif. -- After falling 4-2 in the first game on Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team shocked the region with a 6-4 victory in the winner-take-all championship game over No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay to capture the 2019 CCAA Baseball Tournament title at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

The win automatically vaults the Broncos (29-26) from an unranked team in the West Region into the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament, earning the CCAA's automatic bid into the NCAA West Regional tournament next weekend.  CPP will find out when and where it will play when the NCAA unveils the 56-team NCAA Tournament field via a live selection show on NCAA.com Sunday at 7:00 pm.

This is the second CCAA Tournament title for Cal Poly Pomona in the 20-year history of the event, and the first since 2015.  CPP will also be making its 13th appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament and its sixth in the last nine seasons.

Despite the loss, the Otters (35-21) are expected to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.

In the double elimination tournament, the Broncos needed just one win over the Otters to capture the title, but CSUMB would have had to beat CPP twice for it to win the tournament.  CSUMB jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game on Saturday, scoring a run in the second inning before plating three more in the fourth off of CPP starter Jeremy Taylor.  The Broncos got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Angel Ortiz to score Drew Cowley.  Ortiz brought home another run in Nick Peifer on the sixth, but that would be all the offense would muster in the 4-2 loss, forcing the if-necessary championship game.

Playing as the visitors in game two, Nic Hernandez didn't waste any time putting CPP on top with a solo home run to right field in the top of the first.  Patrick Flynn, who ended the day going a perfect 5 for 5, smashed a solo home run in the top of the second.  The Otters would respond in each of their following at bats and the game would be tied after two complete innings of play at 2-2.

The Broncos broke the game wide open in the fourth when a solo home run by Patrick Vizcaino, a two RBI single by Logan Gopperton and a run-scoring single by Ryon Knowles put CPP up 6-2.

From then on, the work of starter Ben Mora and relievers Dylan Francis, Darin May and Austin Isenhart kept the CSUMB offense off-balance, with the exception of runs scored in the fifth and seventh.  Despite the runs being scored, the four CPP pitchers forced the Otter bats to strand 12 runners on base, including two in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and even the bases loaded in the eighth en route to the 6-4 victory.

Five Broncos were named to the CCAA Baseball All-Tournament Team, headlined by shortstop Drew Cowley, who was named the Most Valuable Player. He went 9 for 20 (.450) in the tournament with three doubles, a triple, three RBI, four runs scored and laid down three sacrifice bunts. Pitchers Austin Isenhart and Drew Atherton, outfielder Nick Peifer and designated hitter Patrick Vizcaino were the other four honored in a post-game ceremony for being named All-Tournament.
