Broncos Stumble Against #24 Cougars Friday

AZUSA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 15-3 setback on day two of the 2019 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Tournament to West Region 1 host and 24th-ranked Azusa Pacific Friday at the Cougar Baseball Complex in Azusa.

The No. 5 seed Broncos (30-27) will now need to defeat the top-seeded Cougars (38-13) twice on Saturday to advance to next weekend's Super Regional, otherwise, one loss and the 2019 season will come to an end for CPP. First pitch in Azusa is scheduled for 12:00 pm.

Azusa Pacific, playing as the visiting team at their home park against CPP on Friday, wasted no time getting to starting pitcher Austin Isenhart in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run by the second batter of the game, Osvaldo Tovalin.  The Cougars would tack on another run by way of a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead before the Broncos came to bat.

APU added a run in the top of the third to make it 4-0, but CPP was able to threaten in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one out.  A sac fly by Patrick Vizcaino made it 4-1, but that's all the Broncos would get.

From then on, the Cougars poured it on, plating eight runs over the next three innings to run away with the convincing win.

Outside of Vizcaino's sac fly, the only other CPP runs came on a two-run home run by Dante Palacio in the seventh inning.  The Broncos were held to seven hits, two coming off the bats of both Ryon Knowles and Angel Ortiz.

Isenhart (8-6) was tagged with the loss, lasting just 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, striking out two.
