Broncos End Season With Regional Loss To APU

AZUSA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team saw its 2019 season come to an end Saturday, falling 19-2 to top-seed and 24th-ranked Azusa Pacific in the NCAA Division II West Regional #1 Tournament at the Cougar Baseball Complex in Azusa.

The Broncos wrap up the season with a 30-28 overall record, the sixth straight year CPP has recorded 30+ wins.  The Cougars (39-13) await the winner of the West Regional #2 bracket between No. 2 seed UC San Diego and No. 3 seed Point Loma.

Drew Cowley got the Broncos off to a hot start after CPP loaded the bases, bringing Patrick Vizcaino and Nick Peifer home to score for the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  However, Cowley's RBI single would be the last Broncos hit until the ninth inning.

Meanwhile, Azusa Pacific also scored early and scored often, including a four-run first inning and a nine-run sixth inning en route to the 19-2 decision Saturday.

CPP was outhit 18-5 in the contest, and in the final two games of the season, both against APU, the Broncos were outscored 34-5.
