CPP Eliminates Chico With Blowout Victory

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

STOCKTON, Calif. --
Patrick Vizcaino blasted two home runs, bringing home five runs, and Drew Cowley went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team demolished Chico State, 17-4, on Thursday at the 2019 CCAA Baseball Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

The Broncos (27-25) will next play on Friday at 11:00 am against the winner of the upcoming game between No. 2 seed Cal State Monterey Bay and No. 4 seed Stanislaus State for the right to move on to Championship Saturday.

The Wildcats (28-21) suffer their second loss of the tournament and have been eliminated, likely ending their season (they were ranked at No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II West Region rankings).

See what head coach Randy Betten, Vizcaino and CPP starting pitcher Tim Holdgrafer had to say about Thursday's victory HERE.

Chico State got on the board first in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by Alex DeVito, but Holdgrafer (9-4), after a single by Cody Wissler in the next at bat, settled down and kept the Wildcats in check.

Meanwhile, the Broncos offense scored early and they scored often, putting runs on the board in all but the second inning.  The first two runs for CPP came on Vizcaino's first home run of the day, a two-run shot to left center field.  Then, after a quiet second inning, Cal Poly Pomona torched the Chico State pitching staff for four runs in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pull away.

Holdgrafer went seven strong innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits and one walk, striking out five.  Offensively, the Broncos pounded out 18 hits as a team and drew eight walks, accounting for plenty of base runners.  Nick Peifer matched Cowley's three-hit day with three hits of his own, one of which was a solo home run to left center field in the sixth.  Brennan McKenzie, Cesar Lopez and Alex Kline each had two hits in the game.
