Host Broncos Lose To Two GNAC Foes Thursday

POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team took Seattle Pacific to five sets, only to fall short to open the day before a three-set sweep at the hands of No. 3 Western Washington to wrap up day one of the D2 West Region Showcase at Kellogg Arena Thursday night in Pomona.

The Broncos fall to 2-3 on the year, and returns to the Kellogg Arena floor Friday at 7:30 pm against Chaminade.

SEATTLE PACIFIC 3, CAL POLY POMONA 2 (26-24, 16-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-9)

After narrowly dropping the first set, the Broncos rallied in the second with a dominating 25-16 win in set two to even the match.  The next two sets had identical results as the match went to a fifth set.  However, the visiting Falcons held off CPP for the five-set win.

Ally Wilder went for a career-high 17 kills while Jazminn Parrish recorded 13 and Aofiaolela Faa'agi had 12.  Kaitlan Tucker rounded out the four Broncos with double-digit kills, tallying 10.  Mikayla Diamond led the CPP defense with 14 digs and Kira Zimmerman (who had 49 assists) and Jordan Hilst each had five blocks at the net.

#3 WESTERN WASHINGTON 3, CAL POLY POMONA 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18)

The Broncos never led in the first set, but they came within a point several times down the stretch, the last being a 24-23 score, but the Vikings, who were the national runner-ups a year ago, put the set away with a kill from Calley Heilborn.

CPP came out firing in the second set, scoring the first five points, but WWU chipped away and outscored the hosts 25-13 the rest of the way for a 2-0 match lead.  The third set was also a tight fight as the Broncos stayed within striking distance, but the Vikings pulled away for the 25-18 win and the 3-0 match victory.

Parrish led the hosts with 10 kills, Wilder with nine.  Diamond added a season-high 17 digs defensively.
