POMONA -- Up by two early in the second half, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team gave up three unanswered goals, two in the final 17 minutes of action, in falling 3-2 to visiting Concordia-Irvine Thursday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos fall to 0-3-1 while the Eagles improve ot 2-2-0.
Jimmie Villalobos broke the scoreless tie at 29:40 on an assist from
Ori Kenett as the Broncos went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and a 9-1 shot advantage. Just 14 seconds out of the intermission,
Cyro Oliveira buried his shot in the back of the net after a pass from
Christian Miramontes to make it 2-0 in favor of the hosts. However, CUI's Bryan Lopez found the net less than two minutes later and the game stayed a 2-1 contest until the 74th minute when Caley Powers scored the equalizer on an assist by Erick Correa. Then, with less than 10 minutes to play, Correa bent a free kick from 20 yards out up and over CPP keeper
Taylor Chaplin to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead despite being outshot 21-6 at that point in the match.
The Broncos had two more shot attempts in the contest, but both were saved off the line by Concordia-Irvine defenders after the shot got past CUI goalkeeper Braeden Hatt. The final chance for CPP came with six seconds left in the match when
Eduardo Faria delivered a free kick into the box where it touched three defenders before Chaplin and Villalobos finally got to the ball and seemed to have scored the tying goal, but they were whistled offside and the game came to an abrupt end.
Faria and Villalobos each had six shots apiece for CPP in the match. Chaplin made two saves between the posts.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action Monday against Hawaii Hilo. Kickoff from Kellogg Stadium is set for 6:00 pm.
