SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Taylor Scott broke a 1-1 tie with seven minutes left in regulation, then
Ambria Pogue scored an important insurance goal two minutes later as Northwest Nazarene recorded an own goal less than a minute later, but the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team held on for a 3-2 victory over NNU Thursday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field in San Diego.
The Broncos rise to 3-2-0 overall while the Nighthawks fall to 3-2-0.
"I'm real proud of the teams resiliency today," said head coach
Jay Mason. " It felt like we started well, but we weren't able to finish our early chances. We learned a lot today against a good NNU team. I felt that we weren't consistent with our intensity and became a bit complacent after scoring the first goal. We showed our grit against a very athletic, hardworking team which illustrates that we are getting a little more mentally tough when the game isn't going the way you'd like."
The game got off to a fast start for the Broncos when
Allyssa Larkin fired a right-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net at 17:35 on a pass from
Ally LaCarra-Platt. It would stay 1-0 through the remainder of the first half. At 51:22, Northwest Nazarene countered with an unassisted goal to make it 1-1. Though CPP held a large advantage in shots in the match (18-7, including 11-5 in the second half), the score held even until Scott broke through with her go-ahead score at 83:07. Pogue buried her shot at 85:12, just a little over two minutes later. It would prove to be a critical goal as NNU would score an own goal at 86:05.
Clarissa Sanchez got the win between the posts for CPP, making two saves on the day.
"We have a big test Saturday against one of the best teams in the region in Seattle Pacific," Mason added.
Cal Poly Pomona will remain in San Diego to play Seattle Pacific on Saturday at 11:00 am, also at the PLNU Soccer Field.
