LA JOLLA, Calif. -- In front of a hostile crowd of 800 on national television against a team off to a strong start in its final season before making the move up to NCAA Division I, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team stunned host UC San Diego in three sets Friday night (25-21, 25-23, 29-27) at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla.
The Broncos improve to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. The Tritons fell to 8-3 overall (2-1 CCAA) and saw their seven-match win streak come to an abrupt halt.
CPP took advantage of numerous unforced errors by UCSD, turning them into points in their favor. The Broncos' defense also held the Tritons to just .196, UCSD's first sub-.200 performance since a 3-2 loss to Biola on Sept. 7.Â
Brynn Sherbert recorded a match-high 11 digs while
Jane Woodward had three blocks at the net.
Offensively,
Ally Wilder led with 10 kills at a .316 hitting percentage, followed by nine kills from
Daisy Duke, who hit .364.Â
Kira Zimmerman handed out 32 assists as the Broncos hit .253 as a squad.
The Broncos led for the majority of the first set, winning 25-21, before slowing down to start the second. In fact, the Tritons jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the second set before the Broncos stormed back, going on its own 13-4 run to knot the set at 17-17. The two teams engaged in a see-saw battle the rest of the way until CPP emerged as 25-23 winners to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, neither team led by more than four points at any time. After UCSD took a 10-7 advantage, neither team would lead by more than two points the rest of the way. It was the Broncos, however, to capture thrilling 29-27 win to clinch the match via the sweep.
Cal Poly Pomona will take on Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos Saturday at 5:00 pm before returning home to face the No. 1 team in the country, Cal State San Bernardino, on Tuesday in Kellogg Arena.
