#20 Broncos Split Saturday After Five-Set Win

PORTLAND, Ore. -- After being swept by Metro State earlier in the day, the 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rebounded with a hard-fought five-set victory over tournament host Concordia (Ore.) Saturday evening at LCEF Court in Portland, Ore.

The Broncos (2-1) will fly home to host the 2019 D2 West Region Showcase at Kellogg Arena in Pomona Thursday through Saturday.  CPP will play four matches in the three-day event, including two on Thursday against Seattle Pacific (12:30 pm) and last year's national runner-up and No. 2-ranked Western Washington (8:00 pm).

Metro State 3, #20 Cal Poly Pomona 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-21)

Despite holding a 35-34 edge in kills and a 27-25 advantage in digs, the Broncos couldn't overcome a .176 hitting percentage as a team whereas the Roadrunners hit at a .269 clip.  In fact, MSUD sizzled in the first set, hitting .476 en route to its 25-22 win to set the tone for the rest of the match.

Jazminn Parrish led CPP with 15 kills in the loss.

#20 Cal Poly Pomona 3, Concordia 2 (15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12)

After dropping the first set, the Broncos rallied to win the next two sets to take a 2-1 match lead, but the host Cavaliers forced a fifth set where CPP prevailed for the thrilling 3-2 win to wrap up the Concordia Volleyball Classic.

Parrish slammed a weekend-best 24 kills to the floor, posting a .365 hitting percentage while Ally Wilder (19 kills) and Aofiaolela Faa'agi (10 kills) added double-digit kills as well.  Kira Zimmerman passed out 45 assists, adding 14 digs and seven kills from the net.  Five Broncos recorded 10 or more digs, led by the 16 from Sarah Clausen.  Kaitlin Powell also served a team-high four aces.
