IRVINE, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to host Concordia-Irvine Saturday at Eagles Field in Irvine. Both teams move to 1-1-0 this season.
"We were outplayed and outworked today by a tough Concordia-Irvine team," head coach
Jay Mason said. "It is very difficult to start a game with poor intensity against an aggressive and organized group. Bottom line, (CUI) wanted it more than we did today."
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams attempt four shots each, the host Eagles scored 15 minutes into the second half on a goal by Jadenn Carrillo. The Broncos only got one shot off in the final 45 minutes and it came off the foot of
Ambria Pogue in the 65th minute, but it sailed wide.
Concordia-Irvine outshot CPP, 10-5, including 6-1 in the second half. Broncos netminder
Sydney Williams made six saves in the match while CUI's Kaelyn Whitcomb made two stops.
"We will look to regroup, refocus, and get back to improving this week," added Mason.
Cal Poly Pomona will host its home opener Friday against UC Colorado Springs. Kickoff from Kellogg Stadium is set for 4:30 pm.
