SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Senior
Riley Schaefer made no mistake on his three-point attempt with just 2.9 seconds left in overtime, giving No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona a 71-70 road triumph over Cal State San Marcos in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action inside The Sports Center on Saturday.
Schaefer, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week who otherwise would have finished with a season-low five points, came up huge when it counted after the Broncos had trailed 70-65 with 37.6 seconds to go.
With the victory, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA. A third loss in succession on the heels of a three-game win streak drops Cal State San Marcos to 8-10 overall and 4-8 in league play. CPP also took this season's first meeting, 78-59, in Pomona on Dec. 19.
The Broncos remain fourth in the standings, pending a matchup later Saturday in La Jolla between fifth-ranked leader UC San Diego (10-1 CCAA) and CPP's next opponent, Cal State San Bernardino (9-2).
In the lead-up to Schaefer's heroics, sharpshooter Blake Seits gave the Cougars that five-point lead with his fifth three-pointer of the day and second straight of overtime.
William Christmas, like Schaefer a fourth-year Bronco, was strong to gather teammate
Mason Dickerson's three-point baseline miss and got the put-back bucket. Alex Gil-Fernandez had a great opportunity to keep his side in command, but missed twice from the free throw line. With 15.7 seconds remaining, Christmas split a pair from the stripe to make it a two-point margin at 70-68.
Schaefer and
BJ Standley double-teamed Seits on the inbounds pass and forced him to step on the sideline for the turnover. The Broncos called a timeout with 13.7 seconds showing on the clock. From the front court, Schaefer in fact threw the ball in. He got it back from Standley at the top of the key, dribbled to the left wing, and drilled his second triple. CSUSM did not call a timeout, and Jayce McCain actually got a half-court shot off at the buzzer which reached the rim, but bounced away.
In regulation, senior
Justin Young's dunk off a nifty left-handed Standley bounce pass gave the Broncos a 60-59 edge late at the 1:25 mark. After the teams traded empty possessions, it was Gil-Fernandez with another critical miss at the line, as he was fouled by Young with five seconds remaining, made the first to tie it at 60-60, but missed the second.
The game had started with a pair of Seits triples sandwiched around a Standley three-pointer over the first three minutes. The Broncos then rattled off an 11-0 run to go up 14-6, with Standley scoring five more.
The hosts came back and regained a narrow 21-20 advantage on another Seits three. The first half ultimately saw four lead changes and CSUSM ahead 29-26 at the break.
The home side produced the first basket of the second period, but two Christmas free throws and a Standley three-pointer tied it at 31-31. The Cougars went back in front by as many as six at 41-35 at the 16:11 mark, and again at 43-37 moments later.
Back-to-back long-range connections from junior
Phoenix Shackelford and redshirt freshman
Demetrius Williams eventually gave CPP its first lead of the second half, 49-48. The contest remained close, with three more lead changes after the intermission, going into the dramatic end.
Christmas finished with team highs of 19 points and nine rebounds, going 9-of-11 from the free throw line and adding two steals, one assist and a blocked shot. Standley had 15 points and a team-best six assists. Shackelford wound up with 10 points, while three steals pushed him up over the century mark for his career, now with 102 thefts as a Bronco.
McCain, the Cougars' redshirt freshman point guard, led all players with his 22 points. Senior big Khalil Fuller posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Seits contributed 19 points.
Cal Poly Pomona has just one game in the week ahead, concluding this three-game road stretch with another key tilt at area rival Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night, Jan. 25. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Coussoulis Arena, with a free video stream on the
CCAA Network.
