SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a shock overtime defeat to area rival Cal State San Bernardino, 95-94, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.
With the a second loss in its last three, Cal Poly Pomona falls to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino improves to 15-4 overall and 10-3 in league play.
It was a second-straight overtime affair for the Broncos, following a 71-70 success at Cal State San Marcos exactly one week prior, and third on the season, as the Coyotes had also edged out a 72-70 overtime triumph in Pomona in both teams' conference opener back on Nov. 21.
With all three teams ahead of it victories on Saturday in No. 5 UC San Diego, No. 19 Chico State and the Coyotes, Cal Poly Pomona is now in fourth place in the league standings, with nine games remaining.
The Broncos went up by five at 92-87 with 32 seconds left in the extra period after junior
BJ Standley hit two free throws and senior teammate
Justin Young split a pair on the ensuing trip. The Coyotes answered with a bucket, but CPP still held a two-possession advantage when Standley knocked down two more free ones with 22 seconds left.
Cal State San Bernardino's senior guard, Jeremy Smith, was then fouled and made both of his free throws for 94-92. The Broncos called a short timeout, but threw the ball away while trying to inbound. Smith, a first-year transfer from Division I California Baptist who drilled go-ahead three-pointers in the last minute of back-to-back Coyote victories earlier this month, came up clutch once again, connecting from the top of the key with 1.9 ticks showing on the scoreboard, while getting fouled. He missed that toss on purpose as the clock wound down on CPP.
The Broncos' leading scorer,
William Christmas, matched his career best of 31 points, with Smith's decisive triple giving him 31 as well to share the game high. A second fourth-year CPP senior,
Riley Schaefer, also had a career night, notching his collegiate high of 26 points.
The Broncos scored the night's first four points and trotted out to double-digit leads at 18-8 and 20-10. They maintained nine-point leads of 20-11, 30-21, and finally, 40-31 at halftime. CPP actually had its largest cushion at 37-23 on a Schaefer triple at the 2:24 mark. He (13) and Christmas (15) combined for 28 of those 40 first-half points.
The Coyotes kept chipping away and took their first lead of the night at 44-42 on a Smith triple just ahead of the first media timeout coming out of the locker room. Surging ahead by as many as five, the home side was up 59-56 when CPP senior
Nikhil Peters knotted the score again with a three-pointer at 8:17. A trio of free throws regained a 62-59 edge for the visitors with six and a half minutes to go in the game.
Still up 62-60, the Broncos gained a bit more of a cushion as Christmas got a right-handed driving layup to go down, and was fouled, tacking on the free throw for a 65-60 lead. Standley extended it to 67-60 at the line.
Cal State San Bernardino would not go away, and later at 1:36, got two free throws from Jordan Mitchell that each seemingly hit every portion of the rim to regain a 73-72 edge.
Schaefer, whose three-pointer with just 2.9 seconds left in overtime won last Saturday's game in San Marcos, was true from long range again. Mitchell blew an easy layup, and Christmas split two free throws.
Trailing by three coming out of a timeout, the home side took the easy deuce through Daytone Jennings and again fouled Christmas, who again made one of two. Smith appeared to have his layup attempt blocked on the other end, but the ball went straight to Jennings, whose soft turnaround jumper just barely beat the buzzer to bring on overtime.
Christmas was 13-of-15 at the line and added a team-high five assists to go along with six rebounds and a steal. He and Schaefer each had four made three-pointers, while the Broncos had a season-high 13 as a team.
Standley was a third player in double-figure scoring with his 11, going a perfect 6-for-6 at the stripe with four assists. Young wound up with six points, two assists, one steal, a team-high seven boards, and a game- and season-best three blocked shots.
Having concluded this three-game road stretch, Cal Poly Pomona returns to Kellogg Arena in the week ahead, hosting San Francisco State on Thursday night and Sonoma State on Saturday. Tipoff for both contests is slated for 7:30 p.m., following the CPP women at 5:30 p.m. All are free to watch on the CCAA Network, either online (
ccaanetwork.com), or by downloading the channel on Android, Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV. Entry is free for Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty and staff.
