POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona used a big run in each half to down San Francisco State, 65-54, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action at Kellogg Arena on Thursday night.
Cal Poly Pomona moves to 14-5 overall and 10-4 in the CCAA. Tenth-place San Francisco State suffers a third-straight loss to fall to 8-13 overall and 5-10 in league play. The Broncos thus completed the season sweep of the Gators, having won 61-54 in San Francisco on Jan. 4.
After home wins by UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino, and a road setback by Chico State, CPP remains alone in fourth, now just half a game back of the Wildcats for third and a game out of second.
After the visitors grabbed the night's first points, CPP took a 3-2 lead when junior
Phoenix Shackelford found senior teammate
Riley Schaefer for a three-pointer from the left wing at 17:41.
A Shackelford jumper,
BJ Standley triple and fast-break
William Christmas layup extended the Bronco run to 10-0, and forced an SF State timeout at 14:42. A sixth Gator turnover over those first six minutes already, led to a Shackelford basket and 12-2 score before an Alex Manu three-pointer finally ended the stretch.
Standley dribble-drove and lobbed the ball up for yet another thunderous alley-oop dunk this season by longtime teammate
Tavian Henderson for 16-5. Schaefer passed underneath for a second Henderson slam as the hosts led 20-10 at the 8:42 mark.
Coming out of the under-eight timeout,
Justin Young knocked down a deep jumper, and then Christmas picked off an errant pass and hit Shackelford for a corner three and 25-12 bulge, the largest of the half.
Shackelford's step-back baseline jumper gave him 11 at the half to lead all players and sent the Broncos into the locker room up 34-23. CPP forced 11 turnovers by the interval, collecting eight steals, led by Schaefer's three. The Broncos turned that into 14 points.
San Francisco State gradually cut into that deficit in the second half and got within five at 39-34 by the under-12 timeout after a DJ Sylvester three-pointer. The Broncos promptly restored order with an 8-0 run, as Christmas laid it in on the fast break again after a CPP theft, ahead of back-to-back baskets by Standley, the latter following his own steal. An 18th Gator turnover set up a Christmas jumper for a 47-34 advantage.
Shackelford's first points of the frame came in the form of a three-pointer, sandwiched in between a pair of Jordan Balser triples for SFSU as CPP took a 56-43 cushion into the final media timeout, and held on.
Standley equaled his season best with 18 points, sharing the game high with Shackelford as the backcourt duo combined to go a perfect 14-of-14 at the line and had two assists and two steals apiece. Christmas had 12 points, four rebounds, a team-high four assists and one theft in a reserve role. Young finished with seven points, including the Broncos' first three of the second half, to go along with four boards, two assists and two blocked shots. Schaefer was held to a season-low four points, but contributed with a team-best five rebounds and season-high-tying four steals to lead all players. Henderson (3-for-3 FG) had six points.
Cal Poly Pomona ultimately forced 21 turnovers, and scored 24 points off of them. The Broncos had 12 steals, and won despite being out-rebounded by a 40-28 count.
Linton Acliese III, the league's fourth-leading scorer at 17.8 points per game, was blanked by the Broncos until a pair of free throws with 3:58 left in the first period. He finished with a team-leading 14, and completed a double-double with a game-high 10 boards.
Cal Poly Pomona remains at home inside Kellogg Arena this Saturday night, entertaining last-place Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. The CPP women begin the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Both games are free to watch on the CCAA Network, either online (
ccaanetwork.com), or by downloading the channel on Android, Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV. Entry is free for Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty and staff.
