SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona got back to its winning ways Saturday with a 77-63 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
The Broncos improve to 12-7 overall, 8-5 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes drop to 1-15 on the year and 1-12 in conference.
Three Broncos — with two more just on the cusp — finished in double figures, led by Jayda Villareal's 17 points. Jackie Ricketson and Lauryn Catching each chipped in 12 points, while Mylah Andrada and Kasey Smit scored nine points a piece. Ricketson and Smit each grabbed 12 boards to help CPP crush the glass 50-to-33.
CSUSB may have scored the first points of the game, but things quickly turned in CPP's favor. The Broncos scored six-straight points to take control of the game, with Villareal draining a three to start the spurt.
The score stayed close for the first two quarters, but a Sheridan Glover layup off a Villareal assist gave the Broncos a 34-33 lead at halftime.
CPP came out of the break fired up and quickly built a double-digit lead with just over four minutes left in the third. Villareal grabbed an and-one and finished her old-fashioned three-point play to spark a 15-0 run that all but sealed the game. Andrada rattled in a three with just about two minutes left in the frame to cap the run and put CPP up 57-38.
While the Broncos couldn't seem to eclipse the 20-point advantage mark, CPP never let up and took the game 77-63.
The Broncos close out January with a game on the 30th as the SF State Gators come to town. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Kellogg Arena.
