Broncos Take Jacks To The Wire

ARCATA, Calif. — It came down to the wire Thursday night, but Cal Poly Pomona dropped a tight 72-69 loss to Humboldt State.

The Broncos slide to 14-8 on the year and 10-6 in the CCAA, while the Jacks improve to 12-10 overall, 8-9 in conference.

Jackie Ricketson led CPP with a double-double, scoring 19 points and snagging 14 rebounds. She was just two assists away from a triple-double, finishing the night with eight. Leilia Orji followed with 14 points and Kasey Smit was just on the cusp with nine points.

The Broncos crushed the glass, out-rebounding the Jacks 42-to-28.

After both teams scored 12 points in the opening frame, CPP jumped out in front by multiple possessions in the second.

Tied at 16-16, Mylah Andrada and Jayda Villareal drained back-to-back three-pointers to put the Broncos up 22-16.

With just over two minutes left before halftime, the Broncos threatened a double-digit lead as Sheridan Glover banked in a jump shot, 33-24. It led to CPP holding a 36-29 advantage at halftime.

The double-digit lead came in the third as the Broncos opened on a 7-0 run. Orji sparked the spurt with a jumper off a Ricketson assist before capping the run with an and-one, 43-29.

HSU rallied, however, and pulled within one before hitting a three just before the buzzer to take the lead, 54-52, heading into the final quarter.

Things were in the Jacks' favor, but the Broncos kept battling. With less than 30 seconds to play, Ricketson drew a foul and hit both her free throws to give CPP a one-point lead, 69-68.

The Jacks had four chances at the charity stripe before time expired, however, and finished all four to take the game 72-69.

CPP remains on the road, heading to Stanislaus State for a 5:30 p.m. tip off on Saturday.
