Broncos Split With Mountain Lions Saturday

POMONA -- A pair of low-scoring games saw both Cal Poly Pomona and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs split both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, with the Mountain Lions taking the first game 3-1, followed by a 2-1 Broncos win on Saturday at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

In the opener, CPP's Cameron Mabee and UCCS's Brian Marquez engaged in a pitcher's duel in their six innings of work on the mound.  It was in the fifth inning, however, that the pair ran into trouble.  Mabee (0-1) gave up three consecutive one-out base hits, including a two-run double that gave the Mountain Lions the 2-0 lead.  In the bottom of the frame, Drew Cowley took Marquez (1-0) deep to right center as the Broncos cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

UCCS added an unearned run in the top of the seventh off of Troy Bethell, but that would be the extent of the offense for either team the rest of the way as the visitors held on for the 3-1 win.

In the loss, Mabee allowed just five hits, two runs, two walks and struck out three in his CPP debut.  Bethell and Jeremy Taylor worked the final three frames.  On the other side, Marquez and reliever Creede Jeffers combined on a two-hit shutout as only Cowley and Christian Moya were the only two CPP players to register a hit.

In game two, Drew Atherton (1-0) tossed seven innings and gave up six hits and one run, striking out six before Connor Tousignant came on and shut the door the rest of the way for his first save as a Bronco.  The only hiccup by Atherton came in the top of the first inning when he gave up two hits, one of which was a RBI single, but then he settled down from then on.

Meanwhile, the Broncos plated two runs in the third inning on UCCS starter Christian Manmano, the only two runs Manmano would allow in his seven innings on the mound.  Derek Marshall Jr. knocked in John Pappas before Cesar Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to score Ryon Knowles for the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning run.  Knowles, Nick Peifer and Pappas each had two hits in the contest, both of Peifer's were doubles as Pappas had a double as well.

SCHEDULING NOTE:  The final game of the four-game series between CPP and UCCS on Sunday has been shifted up one hour and will now start at 10:00 am, weather permitting.
