Baseball Loses 3-1 To UCCS In Series Finale

POMONA -- Ryan Knowles hit his first home run of the season, a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning, but that would end up being the extent of the offense in a 3-1 loss to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the four-game series finale on Sunday morning at Scolinos Field in Pomona.

The teams split the four-game set and move to 2-2 on the year.

After Knowles' solo home run in the first, the Broncos recorded three more hits and had a total of eight base runners, but UCCS starter Jonathan Cowles, who faced bases loaded situations in the third and fifth innings, was able to get out of the jam both times and keep the Broncos from scoring again.  He went the distance, allowing four hits, four walks, striking out four.

CPP starter Rhys Stevens worked the first five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (both earned), walking three and striking out nine.  Both of the runs Stevens gave up came in the third on a two-run single by Matt Clarke.  The third and final UCCS run came off of Broncos reliever Andre Henson when Matt Berg singled in a run in the sixth inning.

Nick Peifer had two of CPP's four hits while Dante Palacio went 1 for 3 in his season debut.

Cal Poly Pomona will enter conference play next weekend, beginning with a game at No. 2-ranked UC San Diego Friday at 6:00 pm.
