Baseball Falls In Marathon 15-Inning Contest

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team fell on the losing end of a five-hour, 15-inning marathon by a score of 5-4 to host San Francisco State in the opening game of a scheduled four-game series at Maloney Field in San Francisco Friday afternoon.

The Broncos fall to 11-7 overall and 9-4 in the CCAA while the Gators improved to 13-6 (7-6 CCAA).

CPP and SF State was scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday due to forecasted rain in the Bay Area Saturday, but due to the length of Friday's game and the fact that Maloney Field does not have lights, the teams decided to not start another game.  Instead, the teams will try to get a game in on Saturday at 2:00 pm, before wrapping up the series Sunday with an 11:00 am doubleheader.

in the series opener, San Francisco State struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Gavin Velasquez -- a RBI single followed by a two-run homer. However, both Velzaquez, who went a total of six innings, and the rest of the Broncos bullpen combined to shutout the Gators for the next 12 innings.

Meanwhile, CPP chipped away at the deficit with a Cesar Lopez RBI single in the third, a Matt Manskar RBI in the fourth and a Ryon Knowles RBI single in the seventh to tie the game.  It would remain tied at 3-3 until the 14th when Brennan McKenzie finally broke the tie and scored John Pappas on a bases loaded fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the 14th, the Gators rallied for the game-tying run and threatened for the game-winner, which stood on third base with one out, but Eric Romo got himself out of the jam, and retired the next to batters to send the game to a 15th inning.  After the Broncos stranded Dante Palacio at second base after his one-out double in the top of the 15th, the Gators loaded the bases against Connor Tousignant, and with two outs, go the game-winning single from leadoff hitter Jonah Gonzalez to end the five-hour affair.

Lopez, McKenzie, Drew Cowley all pounded out three hits as CPP outhit SFSU, 15-11.
