SAN FRANCISCO -- Brennan McKenzie and
Drew Cowley both knocked home three runs and
Drew Atherton went five innings and struckout eight to capture the win on the mound as the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team bounced back from Friday's loss to defeat host San Francisco State 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Maloney Field in San Francisco.
The Broncos rise to 12-7 overall and 10-4 CCAA while the Gators fall to 13-7 (7-7 CCAA).
Ryon Knowles led off the game with a double, then came home to score on a sacrifice fly by McKenzie to put the Broncos ahead 1-0 early. The Gators responded in the second inning with a pair of runs off of Atherton, but then he and the rest of the bullpen from the sixth inning on, settled down and kept SFSU off the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth.
Trailing 2-1 in the third, Cowley delivered a two-run single, scoring McKenzie and
Cesar Lopez to give CPP the lead, one it wouldn't relinquish. In the fifth, Lopez doubled home Knowles for a 4-2 lead. In the seventh, McKenzie smashed a two-run home run to left field, his third of the season, bringing home Knowles in the process, as CPP took a 6-2 advantage. In the ninth, Cowley lifted a sacrifice fly to left center, plating
Nick Peifer for the Broncos' seventh run of the day.
The Gators rallied in the ninth, getting a run across with a two-out RBI double by Trevor Rogers, but that would be all SF State would muster.
McKenzie, Cowley, Knowles and Lopez all accounted for the nine CPP hits; Lopez had three to lead the Broncos.
Cal Poly Pomona and SF State wraps up the four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 am.
