Broncos Drop Last-Second Heartbreaker at No. 15 Sonoma State in CCAA Opener

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team fell in hard-to-comprehend fashion at No. 15 Sonoma State, 1-0, on a goal with a literal second remaining in the second overtime in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both regional contenders at Seawolf Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

With the loss snapping the season's first two-game mini win streak, the Broncos fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA. Sonoma State, which went an unbeaten 10-0-1 to take the conference regular-season banner back in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 campaign, improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Seawolves and CPP went 1-2 in the CCAA's preseason coaches' poll, combining for 11 of the 12 first-place votes.

As the last seconds ticked down on the final 10-minute extra period, a full-on flurry in front of the Cal Poly Pomona goalmouth resulted in the lone score. It was the first overtime contest of 2021 for each side.

The crazy sequence began with an SSU free kick on the left side, which was delivered into the penalty area and headed by Seawolf junior Julia Pritchard toward goal. CPP net-minder Sydney Williams reached up to tip the ball off the crossbar. Pritchard was first to pounce on the rebound, producing another header on target, with Williams diving to her left to parry the ball away once more. Unfortunately for the Broncos, the play, and the clock, were still live, and Olivia Aschbrenner stuck out her left foot and managed to get enough on it to find the left-side netting and win the game at 109:59. It was a first collegiate goal for the true freshman, with Pritchard grabbing her team-best third assist.

Williams was credited with a season-high five saves in her return after sitting out Monday's non-conference finale, and had three of the game-saving variety. The senior earlier extended the contest in the 84th minute with a point-blank stop on leading SSU goal-scorer Molly Murphy after a nice entry pass over the top and into the 18-yard box by Julia Betti.

The day's first legitimate scoring opportunity came less than three minutes into it, through the initial corner kick earned by Sonoma State. Out of the scrum on the right side of the penalty box, came a shot that was cleared off the line by a defender manning the near post, with a follow-up effort going into Williams' arms.

CPP's first attempt on target came in the 15th minute, but redshirt freshman goalie Phoebe Barnes went down to her right to corral junior forward Cassie Snow's right-footer from the edge of the penalty area. Snow's senior strike partner, Taylor Scott, then also had her right-footed shot saved by Barnes after she ran onto a bouncing through ball up the middle of the field in the 17th.

In the 22nd minute, the hosts had another scoring chance, only for Renee Ketner's right-footed shot from around the penalty spot to travel over the crossbar following a square pass from left to right.

The score stayed 0-0 at the break, with the Seawolves, rated third in the West Region this week, holding a 7-4 edge in shots.

The second half nearly started with a bang for the Broncos, as Allyssa Larkin's right-footer from 20 yards straight in front of goal, blazed just narrowly over the bar less than two minutes after the whistle. In the 72nd, Emma Barrow tried to volley a flicked header into the box, but that attempt also went a touch high.

Once into overtime, a promising Bronco attack in the 95th minute was cut down by an offside decision, before the hosts stole it at the death.

Barnes had two stops in the first half, before true freshman Emily Masursky took over for the home side and added two saves of her own in the combined shutout. Sonoma State out-shot CPP on the day, 14-8.

Cal Poly Pomona remains in the Bay Area to take on San Francisco State (2-5-1, 0-0-1 CCAA) at Cox Stadium this Sunday, Oct. 3, at 11:30 a.m. The Gators played to a scoreless draw against Cal State LA on Friday.
