Gators Rally in Second Half to Top CPP, 2-1

SAN FRANCISCO - Cal Poly Pomona took an early second-half lead but fell victim to a pair of set-piece headers and lost 2-1 to San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer action Sunday at Cox Stadium.

In suffering a two-game sweep in Northern California to begin their league campaign, the Broncos drop to an even 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA. San Francisco State improves to 3-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play. CPP was an unbeaten 1-0-3 in the four previous matchups.

The first action of any kind didn't come until the seventh minute, when the Broncos earned a corner kick and Phoebe Amaro's ensuing shot went well high of the target. The home side likewise got a corner kick opportunity in the ninth, followed by a Nicki Friedman header that bounced once off the turf and then contacted the top of the crossbar not once, but twice, before going over for a goal kick.

The day's initial attempt on target came from SF State's AJ Tanner in the 18th minute, but her try from around 25 yards out didn't trouble CPP senior Clarissa Sanchez at all. A generally uneventful first half ended scoreless and with the visitors holding a slim 4-3 edge in shots taken.

Coming out of the interval, it was senior striker Taylor Scott who opened the scoring for Cal Poly Pomona, as her first-timed, left-footed effort from a little to the left of the penalty spot found the bottom right corner at 52:39 for her team-leading fourth on the season. In the lead-up was a left-footed cross from right to left by Jessica Llamas, that was headed forward by Elise Garcia for Scott to run onto. Both Garcia and Llamas were credited with assists, their second and third of 2021, respectively.

San Francisco State grabbed the equalizer at 67:06 through sophomore Sydney Vidos. The hosts drew a free kick from pretty straight on, in front of the edge of the center circle, after a Bronco foul. Daesha Harper's kick bounced once inside the penalty area, and Vidos, a transfer from Hawai'i Pacific, rose ahead of Sanchez to nod the ball into the back of the net for her first as a Gator. The assist was Harper's first.

A little over three minutes later, at 70:31, suddenly the home side was on top, through a free kick again following a Bronco foul. This time, Glory Smith took the kick, from the left side near the end line, and fellow junior Harper was the goal-scorer, taking the ball straight out of the air and heading home at the far post for 2-1. It was a first collegiate goal for Harper, and first assist this year for Smith.

CPP neared a tying score in the 76th minute, as it looked like it was Emma Barrow's shot that glanced off the right post and away.

The match would ultimately conclude with no further scoring, and SFSU was credited with just the two shots in the second half, for its two goals.

Sanchez made one save in the CPP net. Junior Marcella Salyer wound up with four stops for the Gators. The Broncos led in shots, 10-5.

Cal Poly Pomona returns home for its next three dates, starting with a showdown against Stanislaus State (4-3-1, 1-0-1 CCAA) on Friday, Oct. 8. Kickoff at Kellogg Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m., with the men's teams completing the doubleheader at 7 p.m.
