CARSON – One night removed from its first loss of the 2021 season, the 21st-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team bounced back to sweep host Cal State Dominguez Hills 25-14, 25-10, 25-12 on Saturday at the Torodome on the CSUDH campus.
The Broncos improved to 12-1 on the season and 5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Cal Poly Pomona, which had been held to a season-low .165 hitting percentage in Friday's four-set loss at Cal State LA, rebounded with its highest efficiency of the season at .464 against the host Toros. Saturday also marked the third time in the last four matches that the Broncos had a hitting percentage of .450 or better.
The first set was never in doubt for the visiting Broncos, who hit .364 and led from start-to-finish including a 15-3 margin at one point. Sophomore
Jazminn Parrish, the team leader in total kills for the season, had six of her match-high 14 kills in the opening set
The two teams traded the first six points of the second set before Cal Poly Pomona, which hit a sizzling .593 as a team in the frame, closed with a 22-7 run as the Broncos committed just one hitting error. Senior setter
Kira Zimmerman helped spread out the offense with 13 assists to seven different hitters, including five to Parrish. The 15-point win in the set was the largest winning margin by Cal Poly Pomona this season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which has yet to win a contested match this season – the Toros picked up a COVID-related forfeit win that is considered a vacated contest in the overall win-loss record, scored the first point of the third set before Cal Poly Pomona went on another big scoring run to take control. This time, it was an 8-0 run that turned a two-point lead into a 10-point cushion at 16-6.
Cal Poly Pomona committed just five errors on the attack in the match, totaling 44 kills among nine players. In addition to Parrish's total, sophomore
Daisy Duke had eight kills and a .438 percentage, and senior
Ruki Kennedy finished with six kills in a .545 clip. Freshman
Jenna O'Shea finished with four of the Broncos' seven service aces in the match, and senior
Brynn Sherbert led all players with 10 digs as Cal Poly Pomona finished with a 38-27 edge in that category.
Bailey Fuches finished with nine kills for the Toros, who finished with a .057 hitting percentage after committing 18 attack errors – of which seven were blocks by Cal Poly Pomona.
The Broncos return home next Friday (Oct. 8) to open a three-match home stand. Cal Poly Pomona faces San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay next weekend inside Kellogg Arena on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 9), respectively, before taking on perennial CCAA power Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 13.
