Another Shutout, Third Straight Win for Resurgent Cal Poly Pomona

SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team got an early second-half goal from Emma Barrow and made it hold up in edging Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0, in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) clash at the Otter Sports Complex on Friday evening.

With a third consecutive victory for the first time in 2021, the Broncos improve to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the CCAA. The Otters drop to 6-4-3 overall and an even 3-3-1 in league play. CSUMB was coming off the high of a 2-1 overtime triumph at home over then-13th-ranked CCAA leader Sonoma State last Sunday. The hosts were thus rated fifth in Tuesday's latest United Soccer Coaches West Region poll, and were 6-1-1 in Seaside heading in.

CPP continued its climb up the CCAA table during this win streak, leapfrogging the Otters and moving from eighth to seventh in the standings. The Broncos remain narrowly on the outside looking in on a top-six CCAA Tournament berth, with four matches left to play.

Cal Poly Pomona was the aggressor early on. Just over a minute in, Allyssa Larkin stole the ball and passed to Jessica Llamas, who found Taylor Scott out on the right wing. The forward's cross was met at the far post by a fourth senior, Elise Garcia, but her shot was too high.

In the eighth minute, Llamas sent the game's first corner kick toward the near post, and there it looked like Scott got her head to the ball ahead of Otter goalie Aubrey McKessy, though the attempt was also off the mark. After another Bronco steal in the 10th, Scott's try was wide to the right.

The home side generated a well-worked chance in the 14th minute, with Amelia McManus getting a right-footed shot off at the end of it from the left diagonal, only for Alyssa Carthan to block it away.

Scott had the contest's first shot on target in the 24th, but her low right-footer from 18 yards didn't trouble McKessy in the net.

Cal Poly Pomona's best opportunity of the first half came in the 31st off the right foot of Llamas. Larkin sent a great deep ball that got through the Otter back line and put Llamas into the penalty area, but McKessy expertly got her right hand up to swat her strong effort away.

With a mere 84 ticks remaining in the period, CSUMB's Mitsy Ramirez had her right-footed free kick from about 30 yards bounce and wind up in the arms of senior Bronco net-minder Sydney Williams, the reigning and first-time CCAA Player of the Week. It was in fact the only shot credited to the Otters for the first 45 minutes, with CPP at four.

The second half began with a goal, and that goal belonged to Cal Poly Pomona. Larkin tried a left-footed cross from the right side that got blocked away by a defender. Carthan was first to it and played Llamas out wide on her right flank. Llamas then took two touches toward the end line and provided a low cross into the six-yard box, where Barrow was able to tap in to the back of the net at 48:17. For Barrow, the graduate transfer from the University of San Diego, it was her second goal in as many games, both of them game-winners. She now leads the squad with five goals over strike partner Scott, with a team-best three deciders. Llamas was given the assist, her fourth.

In the 60th minute, Jasmine Safarians produced a right-footed cross from the left side that looked dangerous from the start, but luckily for the Broncos, it managed to skip past a pair of Otters without a touch.

From a left-sided Garcia corner kick in the 70th minute, junior Krista Eberle actually got a pretty nice right-footed shot off, forcing McKessy down to her left to make the stop by the right post.

Cal State Monterey Bay hardly got a look over the remainder, and in fact was out-shot 6-0 after the interval, as Williams and the Bronco defense in front of her closed out a fifth shutout in succession (3-0-2). Williams has seven clean sheets on the year and has run her individual shutout streak to 490:00, the second-longest such stretch of her college career. She wound up with just the one save late in the first half.

McKessy, a freshman, matched her seasons high of five stops. The Broncos' final shot advantage stood at 10-1.

Cal Poly Pomona now returns to Southern California to conclude this season-long three-match road stretch on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 24, in Carson against area foe Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-9, 1-6 CCAA). The match will be contested inside the main stadium at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m., with the men's teams following at 5 p.m. Parking is free in Lot 15, with overflow parking in Lots 10 and 11.
