Broncos Stay Hot, Edge Toros to Move Up to Fourth in CCAA Table

CARSON, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona edged past area rival Cal State Dominguez Hills thanks to an early Taylor Scott goal, 1-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's soccer action Sunday at Dignity Health Sports Park. The match was contested inside the main stadium of the venue, home to the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer.

Although the Toros have averaged an annual appearance on the Galaxy's field for over a decade, Sunday's was CPP's first game there.

In extending their season-best win streak now to four games and achieving the clean sweep of a season-long three-game road stretch, the Broncos move to 8-4-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the CCAA. They are an unbeaten 4-0-2 over their last six, with Sunday marking a sixth clean sheet in a row. That equals a single-season program record, with prior six-game shutout stretches in 2019 (identical 4-0-2 from Oct. 20-Nov. 6) and 2014 (perfect 6-0 from Oct. 10-26). CPP posted seven straight clean sheets over the end of the 1988 campaign and into the start of 1989.

When the Broncos stepped onto the well-groomed DHSP pitch, three earlier results around the league had bumped them from seventh to eighth in the table. However, Cal State LA and Stanislaus State had suffered defeats, meaning a victory in Carson would vault CPP all the way up into fourth. The result of course did exactly that, with the Broncos now suddenly in playoff position with three games left in the regular season. The top six in the final standings qualify for the 2021 CCAA Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona and Kellogg Stadium play host to the semifinals on Nov. 12 and final on Nov. 14.

A fifth consecutive defeat in which they have totaled one goal scored, leaves the Toros at 4-10 overall and 1-7 in league play.

Reigning first-time CCAA Player of the Week Sydney Williams made a pair of late saves in the CPP goal as the senior increased her individual streaks to six clean sheets and 580 minutes of shutout soccer. She has eight shutouts on the year, tied for second in the conference.

No doubt knowing final scores from elsewhere and what exactly was at stake, Cal Poly Pomona wasted no time in gaining the upper hand, as with the very first action of the afternoon just 3:49 in, Scott notched an opener. Redshirt freshman Toro goalkeeper Ashley Correia made the mistake of leaving her punt short and it was immediately intercepted by Allyssa Larkin. It took one bounce and skipped off Larkin's thigh, bounding forward toward teammate Emma Barrow. Barrow in turn lifted a one-time ball over the top toward the right edge of the penalty box, with Scott running onto it and lobbing it over the charging Correia with her right foot from 18 yards into the bottom left corner.

Scott's fifth tally of the season moved her back into a tie atop the team leaderboard with her strike partner, Barrow, who was the only Bronco credited with an assist on the play, her first in the green and gold.

The only other attempt on target of the first half came in the 23rd minute from Larkin, and it was saved by Correia.

CSUDH finally produced its first attempt of the game in the 39th, with senior Patricia Rubio-Martinez's effort going high. CPP had not allowed a single shot since late in the first half of Friday's win at CSUMB.

The Toros nearly equalized coming out of the halftime break at 46:51, senior forward Holly Kaemerle striking the right post. A little over three minutes later, Barrow had her try saved coming off of back-to-back Bronco corner kicks, the first of the day for either side.

It was CPP's turn for some misfortune in the 53rd minute, with Scott's shot glancing off the crossbar.

The Broncos continued to pelt the opposing goal, generating a flurry in the 63rd minute with Elise Garcia getting blocked and Larkin going wide to the left. After each team had a pair of off-target attempts, Kaemerle again found a post, this time the opposite one, in the 77th. Williams and CPP managed to preserve yet another shutout from there.

Making her first appearance since Oct. 3, Correia had the one stop for the Toros before being replaced by Alyssa Newsom in the 23rd minute. The senior added two saves.

CPP finished with a 14-8 shot advantage and earned five corner kicks, all after halftime, to none by Cal State Dominguez Hills. Barrow and Kaemerle shared the game high with five shots apiece.

Cal Poly Pomona is back at Kellogg Stadium for its final two regular-season home contests next weekend, beginning with a date with Humboldt State (3-8-4, 0-6-2 CCAA) on Friday afternoon, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m., with the men's teams following at 3 p.m.
