ROHNERT PARK – The 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat host Sonoma State University in five sets on Saturday afternoon at The Wolves' Den. Set scores were 16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9.
The Broncos completed a weekend sweep of their northern California road trip to Humboldt State and Sonoma State, upping their overall record to 16-3. Cal Poly Pomona is now 9-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while Sonoma State fell to 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA.
The sophomore duo of
Daisy Duke and
Jazminn Parrish led the Cal Poly Pomona hitting attack with 18 and 16 kills each, and Parrish finished with a double-double after adding a match-high 20 digs. Senior setter
Kira Zimmerman totaled a season-high 50 assists.
Sonoma State led from start to finish in the first set, as the Cal Poly Pomona offense struggled out of the gates with just a .023 hitting percentage. The Broncos rebounded in the second set, overcoming an 11-10 deficit with a six-point scoring run and not trailing again in tying the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 victory.
The host Seawolves amassed 21 kills and a .368 hitting percentage in the third set, overcoming 11 ties and five lead changes in the frame to win 25-20 and regain the lead in the match. Cal Poly Pomona again responded in the fourth set, however, as the trio of Duke, Parrish, and sophomore
Jazmyn Wheeler combined for all 13 kills in the set including six kills in eight attempts by Duke as part of a 25-18 victory.
The decisive fifth set featured five ties, including as late as 7-7, before the visiting Broncos took control. Cal Poly Pomona scored the next two points – and eight of the final 10 – to cap the come-from-behind win and complete the weekend sweep. Parrish had three kills among the final five points for the Broncos.
Duke's overall efficiency of .515 led all players and was the only hitting percentage above .250 for Cal Poly Pomona, which entered the match hitting .285 as a team. The Broncos finished the night at .223, 18 points lower than the host Seawolves. Cal Poly Pomona had a statistical edge in only digs and blocks, finishing with margins of 73-70 and 10-8 in those categories, respectively
Sonoma State, which accumulated 65 kills – the most by a Cal Poly Pomona opponent this season, was led by the match-high 22 kills of Emily Eaton and 17 kills from Kiana Richardson. Setter Jenn Trephan finished with a double-double of 36 assists and 15 digs for the Seawolves.
Cal Poly Pomona, which finished 2-1 on its eight-day road trip, returns to Kellogg Arena next Friday, Oct. 29, when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Broncos will also host Cal State LA on the weekend, facing the Golden Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 30. Match times are 7 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
