Broncos Tame 13th-ranked Toros

CARSON, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona is getting hot at the right time and blasted past No. 13-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 on Sunday to move into the No. 2 spot in the CCAA standings.

The Broncos picked up their sixth win in a row to sit 9-2-3 on the year and just two points behind the conference's top spot with a 6-0-2 CCAA record. The Toros drop to 8-3-1, 6-2-0 with their second consecutive loss.

Less than four minutes before halftime, CPP got on the board. Jerry Ramirez sent a ball to the left side of the 18-yard box, allowing Kevin Hernandez to take a touch and thread a low shot past a defender and a diving Toro goalkeeper into the far side of the goal.

The Broncos took that momentum into the second half, hungry for another.

It looked like it would come in the 50th minute after CSUDH committed a foul deep in its territory. Oscar Griehsel Facey stepped up to take the kick and fired off a shot that dipped over the Toro wall, but Francisco Aguilar managed to get his gloves on it to keep it out of the net.

Two minutes later, Eduardo Faria forced the CSUDH goalkeeper to make another big save, tipping it just wide of the goal.

The insurance finally came in the 80th minute as Griehsel Facey laid off a pass under heavy pressure to Faria, who one-touched it over to a wide-open Paul Henschke at the top of the 18-yard box. Despite the Aguilar coming in hot to cut down the angle, Henshke collected the ball and slotted it home to double CPP's lead.

With less than 10 minutes left, Ramirez was in the right place at the right time. After Faria got to the endline and used some dirty footwork to get past a defender, he sent a cross back to the top of the box, where Alex Rieg fired off a shot. The shot was on target and past an outstretched Toro goalkeeper, but a defender managed to clear it off the line. The clearance fell right to Ramirez, however, and he made sure to put it away.

CSUDH tried to put together a comeback attempt and forced Jordan Aldama to make two saves in the final three minutes of action, but CPP held onto its shutout as the final whistle blew.

The Broncos are back home for a pair of games before ending the regular season with a bang at No. 8-ranked Cal State L.A. – which leads the CCAA standings. CPP hosts Humboldt State on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Chico State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
