POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona was all treat Sunday with its eighth-straight win, shutting out Chico State 2-0.
The Broncos improve to 11-2-3 overall and sit at 8-0-2 in the CCAA, just two points behind Cal State L.A. in first. The Wildcats drop to 5-11-0, 4-6-0.
CPP out-shot Chico State 19-to-7 but couldn't quite seem to find the back of the net in the run of play. The Broncos scored both their goals from the penalty spot to secure the win.
Fin Jackson scored the first goal of the day in the 58
th minute after
Paul Henschke got in behind the Wildcat defense and was taking down in the 18-yard box by the Wildcat goalkeeper. Jackson stepped up to the spot and blasted it into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, the Broncos were awarded another penalty kick after the ball hit a Wildcat's arm in the box. This time
Eduardo Faria took the PK and caught the Chico State goalkeeper guessing the wrong way to easily tuck it in.
Jordan Aldama made four saves to preserve the shutout.
The CCAA title comes down to the final game of the regular season as CPP takes on CSULA on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in a must-win game. The Broncos are in the CCAA tournament, but could secure the regular-season title with a win on Thursday.
