Broncos Gallop Away From East Bay in Hayward, 71-46

HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona overturned an early 13-point deficit and pulled away in the second half to rout Cal State East Bay, 71-46, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action on Thursday night at Pioneer Gymnasium.

With the win, CPP improves to 6-2 overall and an even 2-2 in the CCAA. Cal State East Bay drops to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. Both teams were playing their first game since Dec. 4 following a break for final exams. The Broncos thus continued their dominance over the Pioneers, having now come out on top in seven consecutive meetings and 16 of the last 17. They are a perfect 11-0 at East Bay under 22nd-year head coach Greg Kamansky, and 20-2 against the Pios overall.

The game began with back-to-back East Bay three-pointers by Justin Vigil before CPP answered through a Christopher Mitchell triple and Phoenix Shackelford layup following a Mitchell steal. The Pioneers would score the next 12, however, and race out to a quick 18-5 advantage as Kamansky called a timeout.

The Broncos saw that run, and doubled it, tallying 24 straight points to grab a commanding 29-18 lead. They never looked back after that.

BJ Standley shot a three-pointer that initially bounced out but then dropped through for 18-8. Sophomore transfer Tay Aubry-Thomas entered the game and immediately grabbed an offensive rebound and got the put-back to go, with the foul, though the free throw was missed.

A short time later, Standley threw up a tremendous alley-oop to longtime teammate Tavian Henderson to close to within four at 18-14. The next time down the floor, Standley connected from deep and the home side had to call a timeout, up just 18-17 now with 9:38 to go in the half. Coming out of the stoppage, East Bay committed a traveling violation and Standley extended the run to 15-0 with another triple that gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.

The rest of the streak saw baskets by Shackelford, Dane Erikstrup and Henderson, and an Erikstrup three-pointer, with Henderson and Standley each accounting for two assists on those four field goals.

Standley rebounded a deep miss from William Chavarin, got it back and drilled a right-wing three-pointer for 37-25 at the 2:41 mark. He was then fouled taking a three at the buzzer, and made all three from the stripe to give the Broncos a 40-28 cushion at the break. Standley, in just his third game back from injury, had 15 points to lead all players.

In the second half, seven points in a row closed the Pioneers to within just six at 44-38 by the under-16 timeout. Mitchell assisted Henderson on an easy layup after a huge block by Henderson on the other end to snap the string. Moments later, Shackelford found true freshman Caleb Nelson toward the right baseline for a three-pointer and 51-43 by the under-12 stoppage.

Approaching the nine-minute mark, Shackelford took a pass from Nelson and banked in a three-pointer from the left wing. Nelson's turnaround jumper two trips later made it 60-45 at the under-eight. Following a missed Pioneer dunk, the Broncos continued to pour it on through a Mitchell triple from straight on and a Shackelford offensive rebound and layup as East Bay called a timeout down 65-45.

The final points of the contest came from CPP as Standley penetrated deep and fed a beautiful bounce pass underneath for Jordan Carpenter to lay in. It gave the true freshman from Riverside his first career points.

East Bay went the last 6:09 without a point and final 9:38 without a made field goal.

Standley finished with his 15 points, still the game high. He was 4-for-9 from the floor, all from long range, and made all three free throws, while adding four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shackelford generated his first collegiate double-double with 13 points and a career-best 10 boards. Erikstrup and Mitchell scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Henderson had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Aubry-Thomas contributed a season-best nine boards with four points and a block, helping his team to a hefty 46-31 advantage on the glass.

CPP, which ranked 28th nationally in scoring defense coming in at 63.4 points per game, held East Bay to a season-low point total with zero double-figure scorers. The Pioneers' previous season low was 62 points, and they had put up 105 in a win at Cal State LA exactly two weeks ago. The 46 points and 30.5 field goal percentage (18-59) were also lows this season for a Bronco foe. CPP shot 44.1 percent (26-59).
