LOS ANGELES – In a pretty evenly matched NCAA Division II Tournament contest to determine who would advance to the quarterfinals, No. 16-ranked Cal Poly Pomona had to dig deep to force overtime with No. 17-ranked West Texas A&M. Neither team came up golden in the extra 20 minutes, however, sending the game to a penalty kick shootout.
Jordan Aldama came up huge for the Broncos, making two saves to help CPP advance 4-2 on penalty kicks.
The Broncos move to 14-4-4 on the year with the game resulting in a draw, while the Buffs end the year at 14-4-1.

The win sets up a rematch of the CCAA Tournament Final between the Broncos and No. 6-ranked Cal State LA, which advanced in the late game Thursday with a 2-1 overtime win over Colorado Mesa. Kickoff on Saturday to determine the Super Region 4 champion and the right to advance to the NCAA Final Four in Colorado next weekend is set for 6:00 pm at CSULA.
In the 44
th minute, the Broncos got on the board first after
Jerry Ramirez stripped a Buff of the ball near midfield and turned on the counter. He found Oscar Griehsel Facey at the top of the box, who slotted it far post to give CPP a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
West Texas A&M scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second frame, putting the pressure on the Broncos to capitalize again.
It came with less than five minutes remaining on the clock as CPP got a corner kick and pushed almost everyone up into the attack.
Max Laguna drove a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, where a West Texas A&M defender tried to clear it, but ended up heading it into the back of the net to even things up 2-2.
Deadlocked at 2-2, the intensity grew in overtime, but neither team could break through to send the game into a shootout.
Against the odds, Aldama came up huge with back-to-back saves to start the shootout, while
Paul Henschke and Faria finished their chances to put the Broncos up 2-0. The Buffs scored their next two chances, but
Jerry Ramirez and
Fin Jackson converted their opportunities to send the Broncos to the Super Region 4 championship game on Saturday.
