Cal Poly Pomona Finishes Non-League Schedule Unbeaten

AZUSA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with an unbeaten record on Saturday, defeating Westminster College (Utah) in four sets at the Felix Events Center on the Azusa Pacific University campus. The Broncos defeated the Griffins 25-22, 15-25, 25-13, 25-17 to improve to 7-0 on the season and finish the SoCal Freeway Challenge with four wins in as many tournament outings.

The sophomore trio of Jazmyn Wheeler, Jazminn Parrish, and Daisy Duke combined for 53 of the Broncos' 62 kills, logging 19, 17, and 17, respectively.

Cal Poly Pomona, which was playing its first match away from the home confines of Kellogg Arena this season, improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2005. The Broncos won their first 19 matches that year en route to a NCAA Division II regional berth.

In Saturday's win, it was the Broncos' three-headed offensive attack of Wheeler, Parrish, and Duke that kept Westminster at bay. Wheeler hit at a match-best .390 percentage and added 12 digs to her kill total, while Duke (.297) and Parrish (.225) also hit at efficient clips. Parrish (11 digs) and seniors Kira Zimmerman (41 assists, 14 digs) and Brynn Sherbert (10 assists, 19 digs) also posted double-double totals.

The opening set proved to be one of the most closely contested ones this season for Cal Poly Pomona, as they faced 10 tie scores and six lead changes before closing the set with a 4-1 scoring run. Wheeler and Duke capped the set with consecutive kills as the Broncos took a 1-0 match lead.

Westminster, which competes as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, responded with its most efficient offensive set of the night. The Griffins hit at a .300 clip, while Cal Poly Pomona was cooled from its normally efficient pace with as many errors as kills (10) in the set.

The Broncos bounced back in a big way in the third set and carried the pace over to the fourth. Cal Poly Pomona overcame a 4-0 deficit in the third with a 19-6 run – and a 25-9 spurt overall – thanks to a .382 percentage including seven kills in eight attempts from Parrish and six kills in 10 swings by Wheeler.

CPP led from start-to-finish in the fourth set, racing out to a 5-0 lead and maintaining at least a five-point lead the rest of the way. Parrish logged eight more of her kills in the fourth frame alone, and Duke and Wheeler added five apiece in the final set.

While the offensive numbers were robust, the Cal Poly Pomona defense was also exceptional as the Broncos totaled 72 digs and had five players reach double digits in that department.

Westminster, which finished with an 11-3 edge in blocks, saw two of its players reach double figures in kills. Regan Jackson led the Griffins with 12 kills and Lydia Miller added 11, while Avery Alger led all players with six total blocks.

Cal Poly Pomona, which was among others receiving votes in last week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II rankings, will now turn its attention to the California Collegiate Athletic Association portion of its schedule. The Broncos visit Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State this next week on Friday (Sept. 17) and Saturday (Sept. 18), respectively, before returning home to Kellogg Arena on Sept. 24 against Cal State San Marcos.
