POMONA – The 24th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team totaled 44 kills and a .451 hitting percentage, cruising to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 sweep of visiting Cal State San Marcos in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action on Friday night at Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos improved to 10-0 on the season, including a 3-0 mark in CCAA play. Cal State San Marcos suffered its first conference loss, falling to 2-1 and 5-4 overall.
Cal Poly Pomona posted its highest single match hitting percentage in nearly 13 years against the Cougars on Friday. The last time the Broncos hit .450 or better was on November 12, 2008, when they had a .488 efficiency in a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in Darlene May Gym.
The sophomore duo of
Jazminn Parrish and
Jazmyn Wheeler again set the offensive pace for the Broncos, combining for 26 kills with 14 and 12, respectively. Parrish keyed the efficiency parade with a .619 clip, committing just one error in 21 swings. Wheeler, meanwhile, had a .280 percentage and finished the match with a double-double after adding a match-high 10 digs.
Cal Poly Pomona, which owns a .290 hitting percentage on the season, hit a cool .393 in the opening set. The Broncos broke a 4-4 tie to take the lead, and then used a 6-0 spurt to turn a three-point margin into a nine-point cushion at 19-10. All told, they scored 12 of the final 16 points in the set to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Broncos led from wire-to-wire in the second set, using a .500 hitting percentage to rout the Cougars. Cal Poly Pomona opened and closed the frame with three-point scoring runs and held Cal State San Marcos to a .000 percentage (nine kills and nine errors in 34 attempts).
The final set proved to be the closest of the match, as the Broncos and Cougars exchanged nine ties and three lead changes. The Cal Poly Pomona offense cooled, but only slightly, adding 14 more kills and a .462 percentage while Cal State San Marcos had its best hitting set of the match at .161 with 11 kills.

Daisy Duke finished with eight kills, and senior setter
Kira Zimmerman set the offense for 35 assists. Freshman
Helen McMullin finished with three kills and four total blocks for the Broncos, while Duke and senior
Ruki Kennedy added three assisted blocks apiece.
Cal State San Marcos had a balanced attack both offensively and defensively, with seven players recording at least two kills each but no more than Emily Vander Weide's seven kills, and eight players recorded at least one dig led by Madison Turner's seven.
Cal Poly Pomona has a quick turnaround, hosting Cal State East Bay in an afternoon matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Broncos will then return to the road next weekend to face Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 1 and 2, respectively.
