POMONA – Another efficient offensive outburst by the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team propelled the Broncos to a 25-13, 25-27, 25-13, 25-13 victory over visiting Concordia University Irvine to wrap up Broncos Fall Classic action on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena.
Sophomores
Daisy Duke and
Jazminn Parrish had season-highs of 19 and 14 kills, respectively, and the Broncos posted third consecutive match with a hitting percentage of .300 or above with a season-best .396 clip in the four-set win over the Eagles.
Cal Poly Pomona (3-0) held CUI to a .032 percentage in the first set and used a balanced offensive attack that saw six different players record at least one kill in cruising to a 25-13 win in the frame.
The Broncos then suffered their first set defeat of the season in Saturday's second set, also facing their first tied match score of the young campaign at that point. CUI outlasted Cal Poly Pomona in a set that featured 10 ties and six lead changes, with the visiting Eagles (3-1) fending off set points at both 24-23 and 25-24 and scoring the final three points.
The Cal Poly Pomona offense erupted in the final two sets, combining for 33 kills and just one error in the third and fourth set, which both culminated with identical 25-13 victories. The Broncos posted their highest single-set hitting percentage of the year in the third, hitting .609 with 14 kills. Duke had six kills in eight swings, and Parrish added four kills in six attempts, and the Broncos scored 17 of the final 22 points of the set.
Duke extended her efficient night in the fourth set, collecting eight kills in nine attempts as Cal Poly Pomona accounted for 19 of its 25 points via the successful offensive attack.
Kira Zimmerman set the offense for 14 of those kills as part of a season-high 38 assists for the senior.
The Broncos' service was also quite efficient on Saturday, totaling a season-high nine service aces. Parrish and freshman
Jenna O'Shea had three aces each, while sophomore
Jazmyn Wheeler added two aces. Senior libero
Brynn Sherbert totaled 17 digs to lead all players, while Parrish picked up 10 digs to complete a double-double for Cal Poly Pomona.
Kirra Schulz finished with a team-high 11 kills for CUI, which suffered its first loss of the season.
At 3-0, Cal Poly Pomona finished as the only undefeated team in its season-opening tournament, followed by CUI (3-1), Western Oregon (2-2), Western New Mexico (1-3), and Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-3).
The Broncos remain home next weekend, co-hosting the SoCal Freeway Challenge with three other schools. Cal Poly Pomona will face Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday (Sept. 9) at 6 p.m., followed by a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 10, and a single contest on Saturday, Sept. 11.
