CPP Begins Long Road Trip With Loss at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona dropped the first game of arguably its toughest road trip to Sonoma State University, 58-42, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball action on Thursday night inside The Wolves' Den.

With the result, CPP fell to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the CCAA. Sonoma State improved to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in league play.

The Broncos opened the scoring on the very first possession of the contest as they used three offensive rebounds to finally get an easy layup inside from Ally Bates on the short feed from Jayda Villareal. Jayme Blackard answered immediately for the home side with a three-pointer, with Taylor Johnson adding a deep jumper of her own 90 seconds later.

Bates and Breanne Ha knocked down three-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor around an Aaryn Pickett bucket. Another Johnson triple and a driving layup by Chasity Spady broke an 8-8 tie heading into the first-quarter media timeout with 2:15 to go. A pull-up jumper by Sydney Fedinec and a Villareal layup off a nice pass underneath by Ayah League made it 14-12 in favor of Sonoma State after one period.

CPP needed a little over four minutes to find its first points of the second quarter, a driving layup by Monica Todd pulling it to within four at 18-14. The Seawolves tallied the next eight points, however, with Ha's three-pointer with the shot clock winding down breaking up that run.

Ha rattled in a three-pointer from the top of the key, for the second straight time off an offensive board, to keep the Broncos connected, down 31-20. A second left-wing triple by Bates, followed by an SSU turnover and elbow jumper by Roschondra Prince, continued the CPP resurgence at 31-25. The home side led 33-25 at the break.

Cal Poly Pomona hit on five of 11 attempts from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes, a 45.5 percent clip, with Ha a perfect 3-of-3. Bates accounted for the other two makes, both assisted by Ha.

The third quarter got off to an even slower start offensively than the second, as neither team managed a point until Pickett split a pair of free throws for the hosts with 6:43 to go, and Ciara James answered right away with a made jumper from the right wing for CPP. The teams combined for 19 points in the period, with Sonoma State holding a 44-33 advantage after 30 minutes. Fedinec had a deep pull-up triple late.

The Broncos made a run at the Seawolves to begin the fourth, scoring the first six points on a Ha jumper, two Villareal free throws and a steal and subsequent layup by Chynna Cochran. Four Pickett free throws and a Zane Sheckherd basket after twice grabbing her own rebound, made it 50-39 as CPP called a timeout with 4:41 remaining. Pickett's triple with 1:54 was effectively a dagger as it gave the home side a 55-39 cushion.

Ha led all players with her 15 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field while adding two steals and a game-high three assists. Bates contributed nine points and James nine rebounds.

Pickett scored 13 points to pace four Seawolves in double figures, as Sheckherd and Spady had 12 apiece and Taylor Johnson wound up with 10. Sheckherd posted a double-double with a game-high 13 boards.

CPP missed each of its first 10 free throws, and committed five of its 13 turnovers in the third quarter. The Broncos forced SSU into 20 miscues.

Cal Poly Pomona remains in Northern California and travels much further north to Arcata to face Humboldt State this Saturday night, Jan. 15. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena, site of the six-team CCAA Tournament in March, with the men slated to follow at 7:30 p.m.
