Broncos Win Wild One in Double Overtime at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. - Jayda Villareal hit two clutch free throws with 0.5 seconds left to send the game into double overtime, and the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team went on to wrestle away a wild one against Humboldt State University, 89-80, at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night.

With the victory, CPP improves to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). A third straight loss drops Humboldt State to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. Now a winner of two of three to begin the new year, the Broncos will be hoping to earn a return trip to Saturday's distant venue in a month and a half, with Lumberjack Arena serving as the site of the six-team CCAA Tournament, March 3-5.

In the first overtime, the score was tied at 67-67, 69-69 and 71-71. The Broncos turned the ball over, and Citlaly Davalos gave HSU a two-point lead through a baseline jumper with 6.4 seconds to go. Monica Todd's shot was off target, but Villareal came up with the rebound, and a whistle was blown as the buzzer sounded. After a lengthy delay to look at the video, the veteran CPP guard was sent to the line with 0.5 seconds left, and calmly knocked both free throws down to extend the affair.

Early in the second five-minute extra session, four more made free throws in a row by the Broncos were offset by a pair of HSU baskets. Todd's offensive rebound and put-back broke the final tie score of the night to make it 79-77, with the senior forward completing a three-point play a minute and a half later as the lead extended to two possessions for the first time by either team since late in the fourth quarter, at 82-78. Todd assisted Ally Bates on a three-pointer with just over one minute left, and Breanne Ha's dagger triple eliminated further drama.

Bates was big for CPP with season highs of 23 points (8-13 FG) and a game-best 13 rebounds in 49 minutes. It was a first double-double for the first-year Bronco transfer. Todd poured in a career-high 24 points to lead all players, adding seven boards, three steals and two assists.

The game began with an administrative technical foul against Humboldt State, which Bates converted before her basket on the initial possession gave the guests a quick 3-0 lead. Two Todd buckets around a Villareal field goal made it 9-3 three minutes in.

Coming out of the first-quarter media timeout, Ha found Villareal for a baseline jumper and an 11-5 advantage. Ha and Kaz Parks of the 'Jacks then traded three-pointers, and a second Parks triple made it 14-11 in favor of CPP as head coach Danelle Bishop called a timeout.

After two Bronco free throws and a Madison Parry three-pointer, another deep jumper by Jadence Clifton gave the home side its first lead of the contest at 17-16 at the end of one quarter. The teams combined for 11 turnovers over the first 10 minutes, with seven by CPP, and HSU knocked down five of eight attempts from beyond the arc.

The 'Jacks produced the first four points of the second quarter before a Bates three. A tough three-point play inside by Todd closed the Broncos back to within a single point at 23-22. Both teams stepped up the defense, and two Ayah League free throws finally tied it back up at 26-26 at the 3:23 mark. HSU broke its scoring drought of 3:59 on the next trip via a Julia Iman floater in the lane.

A short time later, League grabbed a defensive rebound underneath her own basket, dribbled the length of the court and made a driving layup to snap a string of 4:50 for CPP without a field goal and tie the game at 28-28 with 2:22 left in the half. A 5-0 mini-run by the hosts was followed by Chynna Cochran cleverly picking off an HSU pass and converting the fast-break layup just ahead of the buzzer to settle the score at 33-31 'Jacks at the interval.

Humboldt State still held a slim lead of 42-39 at the media stoppage in the third quarter following a Todd free throw and Bates basket. Bates then found Cochran for a layup that made it 42-41 with four minutes to go. A Parry three preceded a great play by Villareal, as the San Diego product inbounded the ball to herself underneath the basket off an HSU player and got the easy lay-in. On the ensuing CPP possession, Ha threw in a triple from straight away to give her squad its first lead of the second half at 46-45 and force a timeout out of the home side. The quarter would end with that score.

The first four points of the fourth period came courtesy of Bronco baskets by Bates and Todd. Parry answered though with two free throws and a three-pointer to level matters at 50-50. Bates knocked down a right-wing triple following her own steal, but HSU got a three-pointer from Parks and deep two-pointer from Davalos on successive trips. Bates' jumper made it 55-55 with 4:53 to go.

Approaching the four-minute mark, Cochran made a free throw and missed the second, with Bates grabbing the rebound, eventually getting it back from Cochran on a nice feed down low and putting in the difficult reverse layup for a 58-55 lead.

Maintaining that three-point margin at 62-59, Todd split two free throws with under a minute remaining. On the other end, Clifton earned her second three-point opportunity of the fourth quarter, but just like the first time, missed the free throw. Davalos got the offensive rebound, though, and after an HSU timeout, she assisted Ashley Peralta on a go-ahead three-pointer from the right wing with 16.3 ticks on the clock.

Bishop called a full timeout, and with 9.1 seconds to go, Ha missed two free throws. A foul was called in CPP's favor on the rebound effort, however, and with 7.4 seconds showing, Todd made the second of her two attempts from the stripe to send it into overtime.

Ha wound up with 15 points, while Cochran and Villareal added 10 apiece. James had eight boards, a game-high two blocks and two assists.

Despite missing 16 free throws in the game, the Broncos made seven in a row beginning with Villareal at the end of the first overtime. CPP was 25-for-41 at the line overall, with Humboldt State itself just 8-of-15.

Parks paced HSU with 21 points, largely through 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range. Parry finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Clifton joined them in double digits with 10 points to go along with a game-high six assists. All three players fouled out, and in fact, the 'Jacks ended the double-overtime period with just four players on the court as they had eight student-athletes active on the night, and four fouled out.

Cal Poly Pomona now makes the long trip home to begin a season-long four-game home stand this Thursday night, Jan. 20, against preseason league favorite Cal State San Marcos (9-2, 7-1 CCAA).
