ARCATA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona got out to a big early lead and never let up in dispatching Humboldt State University, 87-67, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night.
In snapping its first two-game losing streak of the season, CPP improves to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA. Humboldt State falls to 8-6 overall and 2-6 in league play. The Broncos will be looking to make a return trip to Saturday's distant venue in a month and a half, with Lumberjack Arena serving as the site of the six-team CCAA Tournament, March 3-5.
CPP shot a blistering 62.7 percent (32-51) for the game, easily a season high with a previous best of 49.2 percent in a home rout over Westcliff on Nov. 17. It was the team's best performance since an identical effort during a 77-52 decision at Sonoma State on Jan. 2, 2020.
In only 27 minutes, Phoenix Shackleford finished 10-of-14 from the field for a game-high 23 points, leaving him just two shy of the 1,000-point milestone for his incredible career in the green and gold.
Coming off a tough overtime loss at Sonoma State two nights prior, the Broncos came out with considerable fire. They hounded the 'Jacks into five turnovers over the first 3:08 in jumping out to a 9-0 advantage and forcing a timeout. CPP led for the duration in the wire-to-wire win.
Shackelford opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the top of the key off a pass out of the lane by fellow senior
Tavian Henderson, with Henderson then also assisting true freshman
Dane Erikstrup for an easy layup down low.
Christopher Mitchell and Shackelford added baskets in the run. All nine points were from HSU miscues, with Mitchell gabbing two steals and Henderson a trio of assists.
Though the next bucket came from the home side, CPP took a 13-5 advantage into the initial media timeout following field goals by senior backcourt mates
BJ Standley and Shackelford. Mitchell and Shackelford each split free throws for a first double-figure cushion at 15-5.
Humboldt State tallied the next six points to pull its deficit down to four by the 12-minute mark, but that was as close as it would get, as Cal Poly Pomona grew the margin out to as many as 20, 42-22, with just over a minute left in the first half. Another 6-0 stretch by the 'Jacks left the halftime score at 42-28. Shackelford went 6-of-8 from the floor for 14 points, and Standley had 11 off of 3-of-4 shooting from long range.
CPP also began the second half with a Shackelford three-pointer. The Fairfield native then grabbed a defensive rebound and passed up ahead on the fast break to Standley, who dropped it off behind his back to the trailing Henderson for a two-handed slam and 49-30.
Later in the half, Erikstrup was true on successive jumpers, both assisted by Standley and the first one a baseline triple, on back-to-back Bronco possessions. On the next trip, Henderson passed up ahead to a wide-open
Caleb Nelson for another two-handed Bronco flush and a 69-47 bulge at the under-eight timeout.
Mitchell completed a three-point play around the under-four timeout, before Shackelford stole the ball and hit
Tay Aubry-Thomas for one final thunderous dunk on the night. The largest margin of the contest was 26 points at 62-36.
Erikstrup registered 16 points, going 4-for-5 from the floor and 7-for-8 at the line. Standley contributed 13 points, three assists and three steals. Mitchell, who was up against his brother Bryce for the first time, provided 11 points and got his hands on a game- and season-high five steals. Aubry-Thomas pulled down nine boards to go with his nine points. Henderson turned in a game-high seven assists alongside six points and seven rebounds.
Jaden Edwards notched a team-high 22 points for HSU with nine rebounds and two blocked shots. AJ Sims and Cam Timmons joined him in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Bryce Mitchell started and collected nine points, six boards, two assists and a steal. HSU shot 43.1 percent (25-58) as a team.
