CHICO, Calif. – The No. 18-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team recorded the fifth-highest single-match hitting percentage in NCAA Division II history for a three-set match Saturday afternoon, en route to a convincing 3-0 sweep of Chico State (25-11, 25-16, 25-7) at Acker Gym in Chico.
The Broncos torched the Wildcat defense all afternoon, smashing 43 kills in 64 attempts, erring just once for a blazing .656 hitting percentage. It is the highest clip recorded in all of Division II this season (and fifth-highest across all divisions in 2022). It shatters CPP's program record, which was .538 that was set in a match against Cal State Monterey Bay last season.
With the victory, the Broncos rise to 16-3 overall and holds sole possession of second place in the CCAA standings at 10-2, one game behind conference leader – and Friday's opponent – Cal State LA (16-4, 11-1 CCAA). The Wildcats lost their ninth straight contest, fall to 3-16 (1-11 CCAA).
Daisy Duke led all players with 11 kills on 13 attacks without committing an error (.846 hitting percentage),
Kylie Brandt had nine kills and
Madison Novak added eight kills.
Caitie Mueller handed out 32 assists and a team-high three aces.
Avery Percival recorded 18 digs and
Erin McFarland had three blocks (two solo) to lead the defensive effort, which held Chico to just .049 on offense.
Chico State was led by the six kills of Zoe DiNardo.
Cal Poly Pomona returns home Friday for a pivotal matchup with CCAA leader Cal State LA, which is set for a 5:00 pm first serve in Kellogg Arena.
