Duke, Campion Rally No. 17 Broncos To Victory

POMONA – Daisy Duke scored 18 kills on a .500 hitting percentage and Samantha Campion turned in a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs as the No. 17-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets (23-25, 25-13, 29-27, 25-23) on Saturday evening at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The Broncos rise to 17-4 overall and 11-3 in the CCAA. The Toros have lost 12 of their last 13 matches, falling to 4-17 (2-12 CCAA).

CSUDH led from start to finish in the opening set, jumping out to leads of 12-4 and 20-14. CPP rallied to come within a point at 24-23, but a Toro kill by Samaya Royal clinched the set win with one of her six kills in the frame to stun the Broncos by going up 1-0 in the match.

The Broncos didn't take long to snap out of it, exploding for a convincing 25-13 win in the second set to knot the match up at one set apiece.  The third set proved to be the closest as both teams tied 13 times and saw the lead change six times, but the home team emerged with the nailbiting 29-27 win to take a 2-1 lead. After the teams tied at 15-all, they would force tie scores three more times, the last being 22-22 before CPP managed to score three of the next four points to secure the match victory.

In the end, CSUDH held the advantage in kills (63-57) and digs (65-59), but CPP was more efficient on offense (.343-.235) and built a wall at the net (11.0 blocks to 7.0) to aid in the Broncos' fourth straight win over the Toros.

Madison Novak chipped in with nine kills while Kaitlan Tucker added eight to go along with five blocks (one solo). Caitlie Mueller and Jenna O'Shea each had two service aces, and it was Mueller to hand out 53 assists. Erin McFarland added seven kills and four blocks (one solo), and Avery Percival led the defensive effort with 15 digs.

CSUDH got double-digit kills from four players, led by the 15 from Ava Hurry.

Cal Poly Pomona will make its final regular season road trip next week with matches at Sonoma State Thursday and Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday, both starting at 5:00 pm. The Broncos will then return home for their final two matches of the regular season on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5.
