No. 22 Broncos Fall In Four Sets To Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Daisy Duke nearly tallied 20 kills en route to a .381 hitting percentage and Avery Percival matched a season-high with 18 digs, but the No. 22 ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (16-25, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25) to host Sonoma State Thursday evening at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-5 overall and drops to third place in the CCAA standings at 11-4. The Seawolves have won three straight, rising to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in conference action, a game back of CPP in the standings.

The teams battled through 29 ties and 13 lead changes in the 105-minute match. Sonoma set the tone early, winning convincingly in the opening frame 25-16, but Pomona would play much closer in the second, only to lose the second set 25-23and find itself in a 2-0 deficit.

The Broncos rallied for a 25-18 win in the third, but the Seawolves had upset on their mind, pulling away late for the 25-22 win and 3-1 match victory.

Duke was the only Bronco with double-figure kills on Thursday. She also assisted on seven blocks defensively, one shy of matching her career-best. Samantha Campion recorded nine kills, had seven digs and was perfect on 47 serve receptions. Erin McFarland was also a dominant force up front on the defensive side, rejecting eight attacks, two of them solo. Caitie Mueller notched a double-double with 36 assists and 13 digs.

For Sonoma State, Kiana Richardson led with 19 kills to match Duke's output. Jaden Krist added 13 and Leilani Hallman had 10 for the hosts. Brynna Slayton aced five serves for SSU.

Cal Poly Pomona will wrap up its brief two-match roadtrip Saturday when it visits Cal Poly Humboldt for a 5:00 pm first serve. The Broncos will then return home for their final two matches of the regular season next Friday and Saturday.
