Comeback Falls Short in Top 25 Battle At CSUSB

POMONA – Daisy Duke and Madison Novak scored 14 kills each, while two others enjoyed season-best nights on defense, but the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team was held to its lowest hitting percentage of the season and fell short of an epic comeback in a grueling, yet heartbreaking five-set loss to Cal State San Bernardino (19-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 11-15) in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Friday night at The Den in San Bernardino.

The No. 17 Broncos see their 14-match win streak snapped in the loss, falling to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the CCAA. The No. 15 Coyotes rise to 13-3 and 7-2 in conference play.

While Cal State San Bernardino won the first two sets and Cal Poly Pomona rallied for wins in the third and fourth sets to force a deciding set, the match only featured nine ties and four lead changes in the two-hour, three-minute battle. The host Coyotes led from start to finish in the  fifth set to earn the hard-fought win over the visiting Broncos.

Both teams were almost evenly-matched in every statistical category; the Coyotes led in Kills (58-57), hitting percentage (.186-.167), assists (50-49), aces (5-4) and team blocks (15-13), while the Broncos had the edge in digs (83-76).

Novak hit .250 to lead the Broncos while Duke, the reigning AVCA Division II National Player of the Week, was held to a .071 clip. Samantha Campion turned in a double-double effort with 12 kills and 24 digs. Mackenzie Sullivan recorded a season-best 26 digs and Erin McFarland rejected a career-high 10 attacks, two of the solo kind. Kacy Bolding came off the bench in the second set to pass out 27 assists.

CSUSB was led by the 17 kills of Ashley Robinson.

Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino are set for a highly-anticipated rematch Saturday at Kellogg Arena in Pomona. First serve is set for 5:00 pm.
