POMONA – Madison Novak went for 15 kills, but the No. 17-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 16-25) on Saturday evening at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
Both teams moved to identical 14-3 overall records and an 8-2 record in conference play, moving into a tie for second place in the CCAA standings behind Cal State LA (14-4, 9-1 CCAA).
Facing each other for the second straight night, the teams battled through 24 ties and seven lead changes, but the Coyotes held the upper hand in the first, second and fourth sets to earn the victory.
Novak was the only Bronco with double-digit kills on the night,
Kaitlan Tucker added eight,
Erin McFarland chipped in with six and
Daisy Duke was held to just five kills on 25 tries.
Kacy Bolding set the offense for the second night in a row, handing out 30 assists. Defensively, Tucker scored a career-best four solo blocks to go along with two assisted blocks, while
Avery Percival (17),
Mackenzie Sullivan (16) and
Samantha Campion (13) turned in double-digit digs.
As a team, CPP hit .145 while CSUSB recorded a .245 hitting percentage. The Coyotes had double-figure kills from three players, led by the 18 off the hand of Ashley Robinson. CSUSB also led the match in team blocks, 11.0-9.0.
Cal Poly Pomona will look to regroup on the road next week with matches at Stanislaus State (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday).

- Head coach Traci Dahl moves to 47-24 in her fourth year (third season) at Cal Poly Pomona, including 37-8 the last two seasons (four of the eight losses have come against CSUSB).
